Nice system, just beware of anything that needs high per-core performance or memory bandwidth, like modern games. With that many cores it isn't going to turbo very high under load. In 2019 I finally upgraded from my 2500K which was overclocked to 4.2GHz (all core) and running 16GB DDR3-2133. It was fast enough for most things but many games would unexpectedly slow down badly at times. Sandy bridge chips are still solid performers for most things, but there are certainly things they struggle with these days, especially when the clock and RAM speed are low.

All of the exploit mitigation required for Intel's "issues" a few years back certainly hasn't been kind to these older chips either... Though I don't think many systems of this age would have gotten microcode updates for them, so that could actually be a plus.

Now for some blitting from the back buffer.

How you managed to make the old Vista widgets work with Windows 10?

I've got an Intel i7-9700KF arriving today. My current system is an i5-8600K, RTX 3060 and 16GB of DDR 2666 memory. I figured I'd upgrade the CPU while they were cheap and get another few years out of my main gaming machine.

Modern PC: i7-9700KF, 16GB memory, RTX 3060. Proper PC: Pentium 200 MMX, 128MB EDO memory, GeForce2 MX(200).

Just check VRM temperatures, some Z370 boards sucks.. I saw 120C in load on them.

Bought a 9-cell battery for my main laptop since the old 6-cell died and installed it once I received it.

Has a better battery life than the old one.

This is likely bordering on retro, as over 15 years old, but for the benefit of a modern project ( Not so crazy idea : using a Raspberry Pi 4 with jackd , Zita A2J bridge and jack_mixer to make a software S/PDIF mixer) for which I have been using cheap CM6206 based optical S/PDIF equipped CM6202 devices .
One of them literally fell apart while plugging in a cable, so I decided to try something else .

I took a plunge with 4 ADS Tech Instant Music RDX-150-EF devices .
https://web.archive.org/web/20050302121802/ht … asp?pid=RDX-150
They look better built and have the needed optical input .

I probably should have bought just one and tested it first, but I doubt they could do worse than a CM6206 on the latency front and I have read that they do work in Linux (probably class compliant but no idea on the chipset, might still be a CM6206, 🤣).

EDIT : uses a PCM2902E according to http://www.vinylaudio.net/index.php?topic=124.msg254#msg254 . , so it should work well .

EDIT 2: Or maybe I have just purchased 4 lightweight boat anchors --> https://www.ti.com/lit/er/slaz036a/slaz036a.pdf and https://e2e.ti.com/cfs-file/__key/communityse … 0_USBCodecs.pdf

The "Exceeding Max-Packet Size" is most troubling . It is fixed in rev B silicon, but considering the age of what I have purchased, I will probably have old revs .

Are there no more affordable optical S/DPIF input capable USB devices that are
a) moderately affordable
b) decently built
c) not riddled with bugs
?

Finally bought a new graphics card to replace my now 7 year old aging AMD card.
I especially like that I don't even need to upgrade my PSU for this card, so I save a lot of money =)
Can't wait till my new card arrives! xD

Bought two different VGA USB capture devices: a cheap one that only works with GUI (Windows and a few DOS games) 60Hz 2 weeks ago and a StarTech USB 3.0 capture device that does VGA/DVI, HDMI, and many others.

The StarTech one:

SSDs!

1TB m.2 drive - Crucial P1. Nothing special, basic Pcie 3.0. Replacing a 1TB seagate barracuda storage HDD in my main PC that was starting to make weird noises after 8+ years of service.

Couple of Transcend ssd220s 120GB drives for retro-ish projects.

I bough second Genius SP-HF800X speakers, they are low end and old, but i like them and using for 15 years, have input and outputsm, its some sort of wood not plastic.. but this piece is somehow wrong on same plug like my working model, there is lots of stable load noise just after plug them.. something wrong with them.. I wonder if this could be easily repaired or not. i always hate all this strange analog eletrical "magic"..

Update: My friend will try to repair them.. Update2: Repaired, something was resonating when power was on, solution was remove some screws..

Picked up a Mac Mini for $65 CAD today. It was in absolutely gross condition when I picked it up, but fortunately it cleaned up quite nicely. It came with a 1TB spinner, which I promptly replaced with an SSD.

I'm definitely not a fan of modern Apple hardware and software (Power PC and the classic MacOS to Tiger - that's where the good stuff's at!). However, for a mere $65 I just couldn't say no. Plus, once I get Windows going on this thing it'll make one hell of a nice workshop PC. The machine that I currently use in there is a Core 2 E8600 museum piece, so a jump to Haswell powah should make quite a difference. This Mini has a 2.6GHz Haswell i5, 8GB of RAM, and Iris graphics (does that mean it has eDRAM? Can't wait to find out!)

Edit: Nope, no eDRAM. Looks like that was only on the Iris Pro SKUs.

My phone have been acting up at least 6 to 24 month's now, and I have been waiting for a good offer. Like it would start closing app's, reset apps and not store pictures and so on. Like really annoying stuff, that I could live with, yet now have become so bad so I can not live with it anymore. Vibrator have been dead for the last two years and sounds have sporadically been turning off and then on, when I type on the keyboard for the last year or so. Finally it have started to loose contact with the cell phone network, and that is the biggest no-no, because I need to be in contact if my childrens mother call me about something important. Her calls go unnoticed 3 to 4 out of 10 times now. Like... I really.... No. REALLY needed a new phone in this age of digital living. Buying more vintage hardware will have to wait untill next month now. Small price to pay for buying a new phone I guess. 😁 😁

So today I bought an Motorola G30 (the 128gb storage model) for 116 Euro including shipping. I have no idea if the model is with 4gb or 6gb Ram. The description of the model on their website, state 64/128gb storage and they state 4/6gb Ram. And as the model I bought only state 128gb storage, then I have a feeling that it might be 6gb Ram. Oh well.... 116 Euro including shipping, and my current phone have 3gb Ram, then I guess it does not matter if I upgrade with 1 or 3 gb Ram. (6 would be a nice surprise though)

Don't eat stuff off a 15 year old never cleaned cpu cooler.

This will mac mini will probably perform best with MacOSX.
I think MS Office is FREE on MacOSX.
And Microsoft Remote is FREE too and works great on a Mac to PC connection.
8gb of ram is enough if you are going to use an SSD.
But 16gb is just a luxury. You don't really need 16gb.
The NEW M1 Mac mini only uses 8gb ram too and it Smokes Mac Pro's with 128gb ram.
I have a 2012 Macbook Pro with the Dual core i5 ivy bridge CPU.
I have it setup with Dual boot Win-10/Mac-OSX Sierra.
I use to benchmark them to see which performed better.
And MacOS is better because it does NOT require allot of memory or CPU or Disk I/O
Win-10 has to much bloatware and uses to much CPU and Network and Memory and Disk Caching.
MacOSX just runs lighter and faster.
And Win-10 is always updating and rebooting. Its just a pain.

This could make for a nice media server in your home theater room.
just add some external disks.

Since it is modern hardware I suppose it belongs here.

Couldn't resist and bought the Ewave, X2GS and C1 solderkit wavetable boards from Serdashop 😀

Nope.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/microsoft-365 … roducts-for-mac

One-off £130 for student/home use of the traditional, installed 'Office' applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint only).
£60/year for personal use of Office 365.
£80/year for family license pack for Office 365.

Obviously costs will vary slightly per geographic region.

Unless you are a member of an academic institution or a registered student on a college/university course that qualifies for MS Imagine/Dreamspark (or whatever they rebrand it to this year), and then you get a free license to use it, as well as a free copy of Windows, Visual Studio etc, for as long as you remain at that institution (either employment or for your studies). There are some restrictions on what titles you can access if you are not in a STEM subject.

It's certainly not free.

Like someone else mentioned, then it cost money. It might just be that you are thinking that it cost money, because you have bought Mac's in the past, were it was bundled. It is normal to think that... I have had customers throwing a tantrum in the phone, calling me all sort of ill shit, back when I worked as a system builder between 2003 and 2006. They could not understand why it would cost money, and the usual goto explanation as to why they deserved a free copy of MS Office was "But it the software name is Microsoft" Yes. They absolutely thought that it was named Microsoft and the feature of the computer was eighter Office or Windows.... Ohhh how people can screw up when they do not know what something is.
