Hi there is an issue.

I installed this for PSOBB to see if it worked better or the same as the directx8 to directx9 wrappers from reshade.
There is no issue with the reshade wrapper that I know of besides slow frame rate at very high res in a few spots which might be hardware limit.

PSOBB works great with the reshade one enabling me to play at 4K res, 2xEQ AA, 16xAF etc.

The main problem these wrappers fix for PSOBB as a directx8 game is the fact nVidia Optimus and switchable graphics on AMD no longer support directx8 so the games cannot be detected properly and ran on discrete graphics cards. None switchable graphics systems have no real issue just running directly. There may be performance boosts or other fixes by using a wrapper tho, have not tested.

The issue with dgVoodoo 2 is when starting PSOBB in classic fullscreen mode at 1080p the screen is black with just the mouse cursor. Sometimes the game launching flips out and somehow ends up in a tiny window which the game renders in fine but is too small- odd.

One thing I should mention if it has anything to do with this is I do run dgVoodoo 2 PSOBB from steam as I have a steam controller. The steam controller does not work with any game unless launched from steam or otherwise with steam open. It does add a graphical feature to PSOBB such as a virtual keyboard etc.

Anyway wonder what the issue is. Any idea?

Hi,

Does it work for you in windowed mode?
It's a bit weird, I just tried PSOBB (altough not the Steam version) in fullscreen 2560x1440 and it worked for me fine.

This is odd. Fullscreen works now but it has the same missing text starting at the start screen as the above screen shot. All menu items, chat text, user names etc are like that.

This is very strange as I changed nothing on my PC but switched to reshade dx8 to dx9, changed some AMD control panel settings to optimize quality and performance.

Anyway now the game starts fine all modes. It is just the text is corrupt.

Was able to do more testing.

Window mode works.

But for classic fullscreen mode, it might only work in the monitors native resolution.

So my monitor is 4K. 4K res starts but text is corrupt. This is one of the other settings I changed is setting the game to 4K instead of 1080p.

If I set res to 1080p or anything else, something will cause the app to freeze at the start.

There could be an issue with the windows popup that asks if you want to fix your resolution or blurry apps.

The other thing to know about this game is it locks up if the game ever loses full screen focus. So if the dgVoodoo 2 wrapper or windows 10 is somehow sending a signal it should not that fullscreen has been interrupted, it will freeze.

I am wondering if the windows 10 popup that asks if your app is blurry when in fullscreen without native resolution is having an effect on dgVoodoo 2 and the PSOBB activating the games built in freeze function?

Dont know why PSO and PSOBB freeze but in the first version of the game there was no window mode. Only fullscreen and if you tried to leave fullscreen or accidentally hit the windows key or anything, you would end up freezing or crashing the game.

The way this looks I think - if I am onto the right thing - is PSOBB with the dgVoodoo 2 wrapper simple displays a black screen at start up, sometimes with a mouse cursor, or sometimes displays the first loading frame before freezing. This difference between black screen or first frame might correspond to the windows 10 popup appearing about not being in native resolution- which takes different time each load depending on factors.

Also I can confirm in regular PSOBB, if you even so much as click cancel on that windows 10 popup the game will freeze immediately. This is difference between dgVoodoo 2 PSOBB and regular PSOBB: regular PSOBB allows the popup from windows 10 without freezing but will freeze if you click the popup. dgVoodoo 2 PSOBB freezes just if the popup appears or tries to.

Also I can confirm that with dgVoodoo 2 upon starting psobb with any resolution, the game randomly starts in a window mode instead of fullscreen, but the window is so small you can barely see the game, rather than starting up in classic fullscreen as intended.

And the text all throughout the game is replaced with white or gold boxes even if you do get it started.

Testing using ephinea version of app.

Try running it without ReShade and Steam overlay? You're adding complicating variables before you have solved the basic problem which is stupid.

Also disable DPI scaling in compatibility settings for the program if you think that's the issue?

I already did. I dont have steam or reshade enabled during my tests.

I only had steam on the first time I noticed it.

Launching the game directly has the same issue.

I never had reshade installed. I only use the reshade directx8 to directx8 wrapper, which when dgVoodoo 2 is installed replaces reshades dll.

No DPI scaling is not the issue. WINDOWS 10 unlike previous versions of windows always warns the user when they run the desktop or a game in non native resolutions. This is where dgVoodoo 2 is having a fuck up causing a conflict with the warning popup which does not happen when dgVoodoo 2 is not in use.

Does it show that warning popup when you've explicitly chosen a DPI scaling mode in compatibility options?

The app is already 100% scaled properly. Fully DPI compliant game.

Set your desktop resolution to lower than the native and windows will show the popup there too.

Windows 10 gives the warning whenever the screen is not running at native.

Windows 10 (1803 and lower at least) do not give any sort of warning when changing resolutions to lower than native. It only gives warning when changing DPI settings while still logged inn, which might correlate with a resolution change, but the cause is still DPI settings. So if a game is triggering that notification, manually setting a DPI scaling mode might fix it. There's also a "No and don't show again" in the notification.

I don't believe the notification is the problem, but getting rid of it and ruling it out shouldn't be difficult.

The option for DPI scaling is already set correctly.

This game handles it's own DPI so it is set to application.

I happen to be in the Windows 10 insider club, I am on a mega advanced build.

This popup box only appears if running the game in non native resolution. There is probably also a box for DPI settings too.

The box is definitely the problem. Switching to native resolution eliminates the box, and the game runs.

Switching to non native resolution activates the box causing dgVoodoo 2 PSOBB to freeze.

If you cannot get the little popup to appear on your system you may have already disabled it or are not running in sub native resolution.

As I said, I'm running 1803, the stable build of Windows. That popup does not exist there. If it isn't third party software (can you make a screenshot of the box?) then it's something new specifically to insider builds.

Have no idea if the popup is causing it but that popup is a nasty biatch possibly. dgVoodoo 2 just doesn't work on my config at any resolution.

I reinstalled dgVoodoo 2 and for 4K resolution, and qHD, the game creates a mini black box in the corner then crashes.

Anyway I have confirmed dgVoodoo 2 is just a big piece of turd.

Both ENB and ReShade's DirectX8 to DirectX9 wrappers work fine confirming the issue is dgVoodoo 2 not a third party wrapper.

PSOBB also works fine with all wrappers uninstalled except it runs on the intel graphics because it is a directx8 game.

the last thing I saw was a black screen I could not switch from, with the dgVoodoo 2 logo in the lower right hand corner, forcing me to reboot my machine. I did so about 10-20 seconds after the black screen appeared, which appeared when I launched PSOBB in classic fullscreen mode.

by the way PSOBB is a free game to download on the Ephinea server. so try it yourself. do not post here trying to offer tech support unless you have the game installed, try various resolutions and settings with WINDOW MODE DISABLED and CLASSIC FULLSCREEN ENABLED in PSOBB.

also using the DEFAULT dgVoodoo 2 settings, PSOBB refuses to start up at all when you use the NATIVE RESOLUTION OF 4K or qHD. I am seeing an error about being out of video memory. this must be because 4K is too much for the adapters default of 64MB:

guys the only way I could get PSOBB to play with dgVoodoo 2 is changing the VRAM to 1024MB, in order to launch PSOBB at 4K resolution - which happens to be my monitors main resolution.

at this point you absolutely do not want to use dgVoodoo 2 even at 4K, because all game text, chat text, etc is converted to white and gold boxes with dgVoodoo 2.

by the way PSOBB is a free game to download on the Ephinea server. so try it yourself. do not post here trying to offer tech support unless you have the game installed, try various resolutions and settings with WINDOW MODE DISABLED and CLASSIC FULLSCREEN ENABLED in PSOBB.

here is a reason to run with classic fullscreen: if your computer experiences a speed issue, classic fullscreen runs 2-4 times faster than borderless window mode, or window mode. I heard this might be fixable by setting PSOBB to High priority but who knows, I prefer classic full screen mode anyway.

By the way the above popup had to be taken with reshade directx8 to directx9 wrapper because dgVoodoo 2 wrapper cannot even display the popup before it crashes the computer.

That was the popup I was talking about earlier. It's about the DPI setting, not the resolution setting, which again might correlate with a resolution change, but that's not what the popup is telling you about. It's also possible in the notification to tell it to not appear again, so why don't you try that if you believe that's the problem? I don't think it is, I think this is the problem:

Fairly sure Dege's position is that he doesn't support games that use DllMain. Maybe post about it here:

Hey I tested this on my grandpas desktop. That's a 1803 windows 10 system. It's a budget box with like 8GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce 730, 1080p display.

It does not display any sort of popup when running PSOBB at different resolutions and runs fine. Could be my grandpa disabled the popup already somehow as the kids play a lot of games on it.

But the text also is rendered fine on the nVidia box.

It does not render properly on my AMD 4K switchable graphics laptop at all. Wonder if this is AMD specific issue or what.

Otherwise game was ran identically. Launched from steam and all.
