Hi all,

Has anyone ever got a WFW3.11 PC connecting to a modern QNAP NAS? I have SMB v1 enabled on the NAS but it still doesn't want to work.

cheers,
Steve

Hi. I don't own this NAS - What settings do you use, are both systems in the same WORKGROUP?

It's just a wild guess, but maybe the issue lies with the type of permissions.

Windows 3.x does support "share-level access control" for CIFS, I think, which is password/folder oriented.

Edit: Or was it the other way round ? 🤷‍♂️

Then, there's the permissions issue on file system basis, but a NAS should take care of it, I suppose.

You'll likely need to edit the config file via ssh on the qnap since the interface only has smb1 as a minimum, also you'll need to remember not to make changes in the GUI in the future since it may revert back. The above are just assumptions and I cannot test since I've wiped the qnap os from mine and installed truenas.

Although the functionality isn't gone yet from samba it will eventually so plan for when you won't be able to enable SMB1 and below in the future. If you stick with the qnap os then you can also use ftp or load a VM with its own filesystem or that redirects to your host filesystem.

I wonder if it's now the Windows 3.11 PC that's the problem as I have dug out an old IDE NAS and once I enabled SMB1 on my Win11 PC I can connect to it, but I still can't from the Win3.11 PC.

Yeah I'd rather not edit the config files on the QNAP so I may just ignore that and use FTP after all 😀

Aha I sussed it! I had to add an entry in to the LMHOSTS file for the QNAP NAS then map a drive by name - Windows 3.11 can't cope with IP addresses!

Or maybe it needs WINS to be enabled? Not sure. 🤷‍♂️

For truenas I had to enable netbios for sure so makes since that you had to add an entry in the host file if netbios isn't working correctly.

I also did this earlier, but it didn't seem to have any effect, but maybe it also helped.
