Hi,

what Do you tink about these cards for a retro-build?

- GF3 ti200
- GF4 mx-440
- GF5 FX5500

These are DX8 cards (FX is DX9 but renders games like HL2 only in DX8)

What would you recommend and why?

Currently my System (AthlonXP 3000+ Barton core) is equipped with a GF3-ti200...I am thinking about getting a better passive-cooled or single-slot card with very silent cooling system.
It can't be a card higher than FX series and it has to be a nvidia based card.

You can go for GF4 Ti and Zalman HP80D, if you can find it.
I would also consider Zalman VF700 or VF900, although not passive. FX5900(XT) and VF900 would probably be top combo.

I'm running a Ti200 in my P3 1 GHz system and whilst the card did not come with a fan, it certainly ran hot enough that I wanted to add one. If you go for a good 60x60 on the original heatsink, it won't make a ton of noise and is quite easy to implement.

[Install Win95 like you were born in 1985!] on systems like this or this.

MX440 is actually DX7 card (in hardware). In its 128bit memory version is probably faster than FX5500 for DX7 stuff (hardware T'n'L).
GF3 ti200 is best of this three (solid DX7/DX8 performer).

Passive GF3 Ti200 is a bad idea, unless it's a large third party heatsink.

I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.

You'll just ruin it eventually.

That can't run passive, even a passive low profile GPU would struggle if the rest of the system gets too hot, if anything i would mod the case to improve and add airflow.

Does the top cover have grille on it's side where GPU is located?

Cheers,

Yes.

Can't you install a small, silent Noctua fan on the card? They are a bit expensive, but they are very silent, I've seen people mod Playstation 2 consoles with said fans.

perhaps...but don't know how to mount it.
