Tried it unter Win98:
Best i can get is: "The planet Arakis..." then silence. Only music. 586KB free Memory.

Thats why i am using real DOS and Win98 SE.

I just tested the US CD release in 86box in a guest machine with 128 MB RAM and a Sound Blaster 16 non-PnP. In the game's setup I chose SB Pro and also enabled XMS, which says 596 KB free mem is required.

Here is a video recording I made, with config.sys, autoexe.bat and mem/c/p:

Yeah you have enough free memory, just like me, but only in pure DOS.
Dune II need close to 600 kb free RAM. And 1 MB (?) of additonal XMS to work properly. (speach)

Edit: 596 kb^^

That's not in DOS.

EDIT: Wait, you meant YOU get enough mem in DOS. Yea, but you can get it to work in Windows too.

I`m not sure, looks like 586 kb free RAM ist the best i can get.
I don't know why I'm even interested in troubleshooting DOS games in Windows 98. Windows 98 is not the solution, but the problem. 😉

Okay so I think I found a solution that allows me to run both Dune II and Monster Bash without issue.

By putting "Device=C:\Windows\EMM386.EXE 150 RAM" in the CONFIG.SYS and adding "EMMPageFrame=C800" under the "[386enh]" section of C:\Windows\SYSTEM.INI, both games work under the same configuration (shoutout to this reddit post for the idea).

So far, no other games seem to be having any memory-related issues, so I think we may be in the clear, but we'll see. If I run into any other problems, I'll post an update.

EDIT: changing the parameter to "1024 RAM" also works too!
