What VIA chipset driver?

I've picked up an ASUS K8V-MX because it was the cheapest S754 board available (£20 with a sempron64 2600, 512MB DDR400 and an AMD heatsink and fan). It has a a K8M800 chipset and I'm aware from my other via boards that VIA's driver website lists dozens of drivers all of which appear to support nearly all their chipsets. The ASUS page does not include any chipset drivers annoyingly (and it is not wrapped up into a VGA driver either).

Interestingly they list some "retro" drivers that I have not noticed before. Retro chipset and retro OS. Has anyone tried the retro OS one, that apparently gives better performance in old OSs in the newer chipsets?

The drivers range from 5.24A to 4.53. some are Hyperion 4in1, some are Hyperion pro.

I use a similar board (K8V Deluxe with K8T800) in my S754 Windows XP build and I am using 5.24A with Windows XP SP2 (or maybe SP3 can't remember for sure). The system is rock solid stable with an ATI X800XT PE AGP installed.

This platform also makes for a good Win98 build, and for that I would suggest sticking to 5.24A for ease of installation. I doubt lower driver overhead will be meaningful for such a fast system regardless.

I've got the exact same MB as my main Win98SE build. 😀

In fact there is: not under "Chipset" but under "Utilities"
