I got back into PC gaming a couple of years ago and have been wanting to do some retro builds for some time. I finally have everything I need to proceed with 4 special builds. I am having knee surgery soon and have plenty of time on my hands to play with old junk.

#1 386-486
KLH 386 board and desktop case
Tx486SLC/E at 40MHz
IIT 3C87
8MB RAM
WD 90C30-LR 1MB
Opti 82C931
CD-ROM or 5.25" Floppy, 3.5" Floppy

#2 486
Am486DX4-120
Pine PT-430 Socket 3 VLB MB
48MB RAM (what it came with 🤣)
Boca CL-GD5426 VLB 2MB
Opti 82C931
CD-ROM
3.5" Floppy
DOM
Giant NOS APC dual AT/ATX tower, complete with yellowing.

#3 Pentium MMX
P120MMX at 200MHz or P150MMX at 250MHz (depending on stability)
ASUS P5A MB
384MB RAM
AGP GPU TBD, probably GeForce 3
SB Audigy 2
DOM
3.5" Floppy
CD-ROM
Will be built into the 1999 Compaq Presario mini tower case in which the MB came.

#4 Pentium III Toshiba Desktop Scientific PC
PIII 600
PCI GPU TBD
SB Audigy 2
512 MB RAM
DOM
DVD RW
USB
Ethernet (has a special, quasi PCIe 1x slot just for the ethernet adapter !)

I have numerous PCI and AGP cards from the late '90s and early '00s so with 3 and 4, I am just going to see what works best. It will be neat playing Quake III arena online with period hardware, without period dial-up lag. The adapter could actually be on the gigabit standard since this was originally like a $15k PC but at least 10/100. All this is stuff I missed out on the first time around due to financial constraints. There are about 3 whole years worth of games around the millennium I missed and there are a lot of classics I haven't played since the '90s. Once these are done, I will be looking to recreate the first PC I built:

486DX2-66 at 83MHz
Genuine intel baby AT MB
28MB RAM
Diamond Stealth 64 VRAM PCI 4MB
SB 16 (without bugs)
Creative 4x CD-ROM
15" Trinitron monitor
Creative Multimedia Speakers

I also built an XP rig recently:
P4 650 HT
Gigabyte GA-945GCMX-S2
4GB DDR2-533
GeForce 7800GT
128GB SSD
DVD Super Multi
Early '00s Emachines tower case

Good luck, but those lower MMX are hard to push more than one speed grade without overvolting them until they glow. BTW do you have desktop 120MMX chip or are we talking mobiles here, can't remember coming across lower than 133.

P120MMX for desktop doesn't exist. The only way to achieve this speed with a Pentium MMX CPU is to get one of these with the multiplier unlocked downward and set it to x2.0 and the FSB to 60 MHz.

The mobile version of the P120MMX comes in a TCP package and requires a lower core voltage than the desktop CPUs. However that ASUS motherboard has the jumper settings to set the core voltage from 2.0v to v3.5v.

I wonder why you need 384MB RAM, a GeForce 3 graphics card and SB Audigy sound card for a Pentium MMX Socket 7 computer. 🤔

Sometimes you can get mobile CPUs on pga adapters from Asia.

Hi there... do you still have the KLH board? I have one with massive battery damage and hope to find pictures of the Board for repair, because many traces got eaten away...

Cheers,
