A neighbor threw this ThinkPad T42 out (among other things) in a big box of random electronics so I liberated it. It works but it's missing the hard drive and caddy.

That's great! Actually I'm sitting in front of a T60 running WinXP (POSReady 2009 "hacked") writing this post. These IBM (Lenovo) Thinkpad (especially the TxxP series) Notebooks where the best ever manufactured...

I go for walks in the morning in my surrounding neighborhoods that has yielded me various e-trash, someone threw out a dell inspiron 20 3048 all in one that I grabbed, another a usb keyboard, another five usb keyboards, four of them wireless along with three 1080p lcds, one 23" tn with a broken bezel but just the plastic and broken stand which I fixed by using an extra long bolt and nut to hold it together enough while it's meant to use three bolts but the plastic bolt holes are broken through, and the other two being 24" ips, weird lenevos that are a combo lcd laptop docks. I don't have the power cables with the lenovo non standard connectors nor video cable it uses so I haven't tested them yet, nor have I tested the wireless keyboards. The big prize though, the dell aio, I also haven't tested yet as it too has a proprietary power cable and sellers on ebay want $30 for it, f-that, so I'm looking to rig it for testing once I find my alligator clips. It's supposed to be 130w 6.7amps 19.5v and I have a 90w 20v brick that I hope the extra .5 volt won't fry it and 90w enough to power it up. specs on the machine says the cpu is either a haswell i3, pentium, or celeron , 2 core, 4 threads, 2/4/8gb, windows 10. I do know it has an intel 240gb ssd from popping open the back so score already., but want to see if the machine works, if it logs into desktop, whether I'd have to get past user login/password.

Another laptop was obtained freely today from a visit to my local e-waste facility, a rather nice old Vaio with an Athlon XP-M under the hood. Looking forward to getting this one going.

Should be a Geforce4 420 Go I think. Not superb, but not bad for random consumer laptop.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

Probably better than Intel onboard graphics, though I don't know if Pentium 4 laptops used Intel graphics actually. My P4-M laptops all seem to have dedicated graphics, usually Radeon 7500.

DirectX 7 with TnL is nothing to scoff at. I think these mobile chips are a variant of the GeForce 2 Go which was derived from the GeForce 2 MX and not a real GeForce 4 MX part. But it's still a very good chip with excellent driver support.

It will run games like Unreal Tournament and Half Life at max settings and great FPS. It might even manage Half Life 2 with that CPU if you crank the details down to potato mode.

256K external cache SRAM passed?! On AthlonXP?! What is this?

I dunno! For one thing, I thought Athlon XPs had 512k cache.

EDIT: Ahh, no, it seems I'm mistaken, the XP-M 1800+ only has 256k L2 cache.

Intel P3 Katmai and AMD Athlon Orion were the last CPU's with external (L2) cache, maybe some old BIOS naming convention...

Still looking for a Slot A with integrated L2 cache, Thunderbird. 😜

i386 16 ⇒ i486 DX4 100 ⇒ Pentium MMX 200 ⇒ Athlon Orion 700 | TB 1000 ⇒ AthlonXP 1700+ ⇒ Opteron 165 ⇒ Dual Opteron 856

Anything that's better than a 6Mhz 5170 is a win 🤣

Yeah, cache size is fine for Thoroughbred core, but it's on-die cache, so internal, not external as is stated. Surprising inaccuracy in SONY.

Today the cleaning lady gave me a hint that one of the office in our building is moving and they'll throw out a lot of old computer stuff.

It's office equipment, so there is nothing fancy, but I could pick up this and that.

1x PS2 to AT style keyboard adaptor.
2x IDE mobil racks
1x 80GB IDE hard drive (labelled as faulty)
3x IDE CD only optical drives
5x ISA networking cards, only one with RJ45
2x S3 Trio 3D/2X 8MB, one Trio64V with memory expansion
A pair of fairly decent sounding unbranded active speakers
A bucket worth of RAM, mostly DDR1 and SD, some EDO
A bucket worth of 3.5" floppies and driver CDs. Some for ATI Rage, Sound Blaster 16, ABIT VH6 (with manual, some still sealed) and some other software (Nero, Norton Antivirus, etc.).
About 3 or 4 Windows 98 installers, boot floppy included, one still sealed. One Office 2000 CD
Some antistatic bags

A friend gave me old Dell Latitude C610 in bad shape: no RAM, broken HDD, some keys missing, overheating, CD not working etc.
Fixed it just because it has nice PIII 1GHz Tualatin and Mobility Radeon with 16MB local VRAM.
Now it works pretty nice, Unreal and RTCW are playable at 1024.

that's a good rescue given all those problems it had. makes for a nice gaming laptop too!
