Nothing interesting. Only some RAM's for which I paid 10 EUR. I believe they weren't even worth the money, but since I went to the seller for some other stuff (not retro computer-related), I also bought these from him, since he was advertising them on a local flea market. Maybe this one is interesting: kvr400x64c3ak2/2g. Is this a 2GB DDR1 RAM stick or what?

1GB. Below it says "Kit of 2".

Two recent purchases

#1 - Avance ALS100+ Sound card

I've read a lot about these cards being 'noisy' from electrical interference and a little finicky but overall they are good and have discrete OPL (clone) chips.

I can confirm that when I first installed this, there was definitely a lot of high frequency interference. However after more closely inspecting the card I noticed a jumper block which changes output from amplified to line level. After that it sounded much better. Music sounds pretty good. Overall, I think it's an upgrade from my previous Aztech 2320 + modem combo. Also fits better in a pizza box.

The initializer for DOS is a bit weird as high and low DMA are detected as the same even if you set them separately. If you boot into windows, the resources are allocated as expected.

Also, in Win98, I found the win95 drivers to be better.

#2 - PCI Geforce2 mx200

This was listed as parts, so I took a chance on it for a dollar. It has some issues but I was able to get it running, read the thread here geforce mx200 corruption

17’ Apple Studio Display in its original box to replace my behemoth and finicky 23” ACD HD acrylic. This one will take up much less desk space thereby keeping the wife happy 😉

A shame, but it’s perhaps time for the 23” ACD to find a new home…

i guess 98 & 95 are close enough but still odd that the driver for 95 works better in 98 than the 98 one!

Not that odd, actually. The Windows 98 drivers were probably WDM drivers, a newer device driver model that was introduced in Windows 98. Windows 95 didn't support WDM and still required VxD drivers, whereas Windows 98 would support both VxD and WDM drivers. It was not unheard of that the WDM versions of certain sound card drivers back in the day would be less mature and/or less fully-featured than the VxD drivers for the same hardware. If I remember reading somewhere correctly, VxD drivers for some PCI sound cards would include Sound Blaster emulation, whereas the WDM drivers for the same hardware would not.

The haul
File license
CC-BY-4.0

2x Matsushita-Kotobuki CR-562-B optical drives - 2 top left
1x M-K CR-563-B OD - bottom left
1x HP C4380-56000 2x/6x OD - the top right one
1x TEAC CD-W54E - bottom right one

1x TEAC FD-55B 5.25" FDD (from Ebay) - left one
1x IBM-badged QumeTrak 142 5.25" FDD - right one

1x 3Com 3C595-TX 10/100 ethernet, PCI and looks to be in really good shape.

1x Envision EN-775e 17" (16" viewable) CRT, .25mm dot pitch, up to 120hz vertical refresh. Was one of the two working ones I found minus a cap/voltage issue the other one supposedly had, bonus is that this fits my black scheme and comes with the little stand unlike the other one

1x NIB Precision MOUSERGOPS2 3 buttton ergo mouse

Software haul is as follows:

  • NIB MS-DOS 4.01 (there's still a box of these)
  • MS-DOS 5 install diskettes shrink-wrapped with manual (same as above, but also in 1.2MB 5.25 floppy format)
  • Windows 95 + Upgrade, as well as Win95 with USB support
  • Gunmetal - apparently these keep popping up; either way, never played it but it looks fun and big box
  • Internet Explorer 4
  • MS Works
  • WindowsNT Workstation V4 for 1-2 CPUs, both in CD and 1.44MB floppy diskette
  • Some optiquest driver diskette

And then a Win98 Certificate of Authenticity/manual and 2x Win95 ones. Part of me was really hoping to dig up a disk for some form of Win98 and maybe MS-DOS 6 but oh well

I'm gonna be using one of the ODDs, probably the TEAC with the driver that lets me set the speed so things can be quiet, and hopefully at least one of the two FDDs work. Software is absolutely getting dumped and archived if I can bring my self to pop the seals on those MS-DOS boxes

I had the same issue with the previous sound card too --I could tell instantly by the windows startup sound: Win98 WDM version would have a strange "hiccup" during playback whereas the win95 driver was smooth as silk.

Scored two free copies of NT4 + Service Pack 4. One was already opened, the other is still fully wrapped. Both seem to include every little bit with nothing missing.

1. Yes, it is. A few people even mentioned him as a reason for being there or getting interested; I blame him for me even getting in retro and starting my decent into madness =3=
2. It's by invite/appointment only. They have a Facebook group you have to be in where they post the events (usually for Saturdays) called Computer Reset Warehouse Liquidation; they also have Computer Reset Warehouse Buy and Sell where you can ask for things in or keep an eye on if you find driving to Dallas a bit much. Was there for 3 hours and somehow it didn't feel like that at all, lmao. Also, they apparently have some deadline of 8 months for everything that's going to get got, gets got, so if you're planning to go one day you still got some time.

They accept PayPal if you don't bring, or forget to bring, cash

Nothing much this weekend. Just genericcy bits, one more of my favorite Compaq compact keyboard, apparently nicknamed Dingo for some reason, HP PN 505055-371 . Plus another i/o card, should probably start tallying them to boards to see if I have enough yet. This one has a MagiTronic wsticker and PN A-B247GL but the FCC ID is Winbond ID2-W83757S .. IDK if this might be the ultimate repairable I/O card though, because I notice that beside Winbond W83757F (Which seem common enough) all the other chips are non-obfuscated standard parts, 244 and 245 for the IDE buffers, 556 for the gameport (I think) 1488 and 1489 for serial drivers. It would approach perfection if it had the settings screened on it, but can't have everything I guess. I notice that that i/o chip supports switchable A/B mode, not sure if It's got a jumper yet, but that would be nice to break out to a toggle on a sub 486 so you can boot 5.25s or 3.5s.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

Hi,

Recently I bought the IBM 5160 in not operation condition. There were problems with PSU, video card, memory extension board. It also came with no HDD and MFM controller card.
I am trying to repair all this stuff and already find some dead capacitors that should be replaced.
Studying materials about this machine ( link1 , link2, link3) I found that I bought one of the earliest 5160 with the first motherboard revision with the earliest BIOS version on board.
Does it mean that I found something rare, interesting peace of history?

Strictly speaking - yesterday, but who to judge? 🤣

Amiga 500 including Philips 8833 monitor. Both with "Artist series" stickers? I figure it was the monitor, that originated that?

External floppy

Internal 512 KiB memory expansion. Incredibly enough, battery hasn't leaked .. Yet - but in 10 minutes it will be gone from the board 😉

I need a bit of advice - it hasn't been powered on in this century, but how are the A500s with regards to capacitor plague? Will it be down right stupid not to open and examine the power supply before plugging?

Got a best offer accepted on a PCI card which had untested in the title and about 4 times in the description.

Did look like the seller was not into buying/selling this kind of stuff so decided it was worth the risk for the lower price paid.

And it was! 😀

Nice to hear that relay click sound that I have seen posted about on this forum.

I got a fully working Soundblaster 16 Pro CSP (CT2290). It has the not very useful CSP chip in a socket and only seems to have only the type 2 of the hanging note bug, that's a plus. https://www.vogonswiki.com/index.php/Hanging_note_bug
It is interesting that only the address can set with a jumper, DMA and IRQ then via the SET BLASTER variable. Despite this is not a PnP card, I was surprised to see that it has Unisound support. 🤩
