It's sitting around in my garage just asking to be messed with.

I thought Win 98 but it won't take advantage of the second core.

XP Pro?

Wild ideas?

I either fix it or break it permanently... there is no try.

This is really a Windows XP class machine.

Find a decent compatible graphics card (Nvidia GTX 2xx) and it can become a good WIndows XP gaming machine, for games that fair poorly on more modern Windows 10 machines.

You will struggle with Windows 98, especially if you don't have a lot of experience with it.

Depending on your motherboard you could make it a killer XP rig. Throw a early enough pcie GPU in it and a DOS/98 compatible PCI card in it and maaaaaybe DOS? Not sure if you could get SATA to work so maybe an older PCI card as well? Not sure, but maybe other people here have ideas.

Main pc: Asus ROG 17. R9 5900HX, RTX 3070m, 16gb ddr4 3200, 1tb NVME.
Retro PC: Soyo P4S Dragon, 3gb ddr 266, 120gb Maxtor, Geforce Fx 5950 Ultra, SB Live! 5.1

32 or 64 bit for gaming in mind?

It's a Sandy Bridge (2nd generation Core i) released in 2011 so you can forget about running Win9x on it; it's just not practical looking for Win9x compatible drivers for the MB chipset and video cards.

It is slightly faster than my C2D E7400 (2008) WinXP build; give it an SSD and you can have a nice WinXP / Win7+ hybrid.

You guys were absolutely right.

This thing is a rocket with XP, SSD and the NVidia GeForce 8400 GS.

Some 95/98 games won't run, but those that do.... oh my....

If you get a bit more capable GPU in there, it will totally blow your doors off!

Maybe add an SB Live for some EAX goodness now that it doesn't really work on windows 10.

Seconded. My E7400 is paired with an e-waste found Radeon HD 5670, which is 457% of GeForce 8400 GS, according to TechPowerUp.
