If it helps, there are WSS drivers v1.0 and v2.00 on archive.org but I haven't seen v1.0a anywhere.

PC#1: Pentium MMX 166 / Soyo SY-5BT / S3 Trio64V+ / Voodoo1 / YMF719 / AWE64 Gold / SC-155
PC#2: AthlonXP 2100+ / ECS K7VTA3 / Voodoo3 / Audigy2 / Vortex2
PC#3: Athlon64 3400+ / Asus K8V-MX / 5900XT / Audigy2
PC#4: i5-3570K / MSI Z77A-G43 / GTX 970 / X-Fi

Yeah I did come acrossed version 1.0 and 2.o also on various sites to my understanding 1.0 has no dos support and 2.0 does whit it's wssxlat but no fm and
wavetable synthesis support 😑 how ever version 1.0a claims it does

Oh, I see, that's bad. I'll keep an eye on this. If something pops up on eBay, I will tell.
And/or try to acquire the floppies and upload images of them here.

Determining Version of Windows Sound System 1.0x Software (105924)

The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft Windows Sound System 1.0
Microsoft Windows Sound System 1.0a
This article was previously published under Q105924
SUMMARY
There are three ways to determine which version of the Windows Sound System software you are running:

Start Windows and open the Windows Sound System group. If you have a Games Configuration icon, you are using version 1.0a of Windows Sound System software. -or-

Start Windows and open the Windows Sound System group.

Start Quick Recorder.
From the Help menu, choose About. The dialog box will report either version 1.0 or 1.0a.
Start Volume Control, Recording Control, or Sound Finder.
From the System menu on the top-left corner, choose About. The dialog box will report either version 1.0 or 1.0a
-or-

Compare the file and file sizes (the following file details are for 1.0a).

Check the Windows Sound System Setup Disk 1 for the file:
GAMECNFG EX_ 11796 02-17-93 1:00a

Check the C:\SNDSYS directory for the file:
GAMECNFG.EXE 23049 02-17-93 1:00:10am

Doing a bit of research, it looks like the Adaptec AMM-1570 and 1572 probably came with WSS 1.0a as the listing for what configuration changes are done, lists some files that only came with 1.0a.
https://storage.microsemi.com/en-us/support/_ … m-1570_info.htm

The install file is still available, but is way too small to be 5 disks worth as it is only 993KB.

Hi,

anyone still interested in WSS rev 1.0a? I do have original OEM disks which came with my 486 machine back in the day. It's 5 disks containing "Microsoft Windows Sound System, rev 1.0a".
It's about 5.7MB when zipped. Listing is attached.

However... there is a catch: I only have the German version. 😀

Setup, readme and help files are all in German. Shouldn't matter much if you just wanted the drivers - and are happy to just keep clicking "OK" and "weiter" (continue) buttons when installing...

All files are dated March 9th, 1993 - so about 3 weeks later than the English language version. Make sense though, the translation probably took a few days...

I wouldn't put to much hope in FM synthesizer support though. I remember running DOS games in Windows back then. As far as I remember the Soundblaster emulation only covered DAC output. Still, that was better than nothing...

I can upload the ZIP somewhere, if there was still interest.

No need for it personally, but I love it when posts like this appear. Great work. Uploading to archive.org woud be an excellent idea.

Ok, I went ahead and uploaded them to archive.org. Hopefully it's going to be useful to someone:

The disks came bundled with Windows 3.1 and an Olivetti 486 computer in 1993. The stickers also mention "Olivetti", but the contents are plain Microsoft WSS 1.0a drivers.
