Now, two cards I haven't seen before. A Voodoo Rush and a Midas3. Pretty underwhelming cards for Win9x gaming but nice to have in my collection.
Voltage regulators are missing on both of them. They are in otherwise good condition.
I never had to replace voltage regulators before. I have no idea what the markings mean, so I have no idea what the replacements would be.

Nice find of a Power VR Card. From the picture on this side (https://vintage3d.org/midas3.php) it should be a LT1587CT-3.6
Datasheet here: https://www.analog.com/media/en/technical-doc … ets/158457a.pdf
It has a fixed output of 3.6V indicated by the CT-3.6.
This part has a very long lead time: https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/an … -3-6-PBF/963052
You should also use a heatsink as shown in the picture, it will get hot.

I'm a simple man. I see Zalman heatsink, I buy 😀 Sadly it came without socket 478 clips, but otherwise in very good shape.

-Geforce 3 Ti 500 - this wasn't cheap but seems in very good condition and I was never able to afford one back in the day. I ended up with a Leadtek Winfast Ti 4400 as a birthday present a year later though, but my eye has now turned to sourcing either a 9700 Pro or a 9800XT as this card's potential upgrade partner.

This Geforce 3 looks like the one I got: Re: Bought these (retro) hardware today
Then it is a Quadro DCC based on the Geforce 3. This thing should be overclockable to the Ti500 values. The noise is makes questionable.
Phil has a god video about the very similar Geforce 2 based Quadro: https://youtu.be/ku9Cp3o13QI?t=874

Yeah, that almost exact design is used for a few different models. Trying to figure out exactly which one it is is very maddening just by looking at pictures.

The Ti was the mid-year refresh, but they had the orig GF3 on that design also, got one of those. I have seen ti500 like that before though. But yep, hard to tell without close inspection which one it is.

It all depends on what you want to do with it, if you want to play games a simple 512K RAM expansion on an A500 will cover you for 99% of the library anyway.

Yup.... That can not be more true. 1 x A500 + 512k + Kick 1.3 + RGBtoHDMI + Gotek = Tons of fun.
The reason is that the A500 was the defacto Amiga gaming machine, before PC got more juice around 1991.
And the 1200 came out around 1992, and did not even come close to top-tear PC's at that time.

Ok thanks for the info. I grew up with the a500. It was used when I got it maybe in 1992 or something. I am sometimes tempted to get one but I don't really have the room and most of the (mostly adventure) games I liked are also on pc (with voices).

No problemo. 😀
Yes, the good old 500 is the cheapest to get when you only want to game. Speaking of gaming, then have you seen the a500-Mini that will be launched next year?

Yeah sure but it is not real enough for me. I also easily get overwhelmed so I don't want yet an other device with a lot of (inbuilt) games. It is a bit wierd but this feeling has struck me the last few years.

This pretty cool Philips monitor. Made in 1998, still looks like 80s thing. I was a bit afraid CCTV monitor will have bleached colour/contrast due to 24/7 use, but it's great beside one burned dot in the center. Needs an inspection for sure though.

Yah it will be cool when you can buy them dead for $5 to recase a Pi or minimig based board in.

Yesterday I made my weekly stop at a local thrift and picked up a couple more towers, both of them Antec cases, and there was also a third Antec case which I left because it's exactly the same as one I already have, and I didn't want to be greedy 🤣. It's very interesting how this same thrift seems to get their hands on so many Antec cases. Unfortunately the ones I picked up this time were not complete, but the cases...

The first one was $7 and has an ASUS M3A78-EMH HDMI motherboard and some flavor of AMD Athlon 64 AM2 CPU, though I haven't taken the cooler off yet to find out. Nice that it's a Zalman.

20211027-223127.jpg

Then this guy was sitting there right next to it, for the awesome price of $10. Really stoked that it has the side window, and silver seems to be far less common. It came with an ASUS P4P800-E motherboard and a socket 478 P4 2.8 GHz also with Zalman cooler. I'll probably put the board and CPU up for sale on ebay as I doubt I'll be building a socket 478 P4 system.

I guess the only issues there would be the keyboard interface and Floppy/IDE controller emulation. Actually, scratch the latter, you can just do everything off the SD Card.

That kind of renders the purpose of the 500-mini invalid. It is a plug-in-and-use device, for those that do not want or can not make an PI solution or those that just dont have the time for making stuff.

Yup. The 500-mini is just an plug in and play games console aproach to OCS, ECS and AGA in one solution. No working keyboard. However the same people did this TheC64-Mini as well, and that can use external keyboards. So I guess this 500-Mini can use USB Keyboards as well.

I fully get you.... I do have an The-C64 (full size with working keyboard), and it has 64 games build into it. However I can load games from an USB stick or I can create my own custom firmware with only the games I like. It is kind of fully open to customize i you know were to look for the firmware creator tool. But that feeling of only having a few games ready, I fully understand. As to why I have build my own "real deal" C64's from scratch and I have one original breadbin as well. That way I can use my PI-1541/FastLoader cartridge that has a folder with only the games that I like. Aprox some 15 games or something.

I suspect that the 500-mini will be the same kind of deal. Being able to load games from an USB Stick or create a custom firmware. It comes with cloanto license and it is also mentioned that it will contain technology from the WHD-Loader project. So I guess it can also run Workbench in one way or another.

Your Zalman HSFs probably didn't come with any brackets for different systems, so if you don't plan to keep the P4, I reckon the Zalman HSF will probably not be much use to you till you find the correct adapters?

There's always a load of hype about these things, then they actually ship way more closed and limited, with 2 okay games and a bunch of shovelware and are a PITA to do anything else with.

Thanks. I really appreciate it. I'd love to see what this card can do.
I may want to post the results. You think I may have an issue running it on my Pentium III 1.1ghz?
I have a paranoia about running early 3d cards with fast cpus. I'm always imagining they'll overheat the cards.

What exactly does the A500-Mini bring to the table that running Amibian on a Raspberry Pi 3 does not then?

Alot actually - for people who just want to relive their childhood memories. Easy to use and works out of the box without messing with vintage hardware and/or vintage software and/or emulator setup. Entry level retro computers (and, yes, A500-Mini is a retro computer while original Amiga 500 is not) like that bring more people to the hobby which is a good thing.

Nothing. It's a steal of your money.

Better use WinUAE or something. A lot of ready-made packages also exist, legally to boot:

Yeah, honestly that's the main reason I picked up the black tower, I just didn't realize at the time it's a socket 478 board. That being the case I'll likely just auction that Zalman as well and only keep the case. Unless I can find clips/brackets for an LGA 775 or something other for cheap.

If you do not want to spend the time, you can pay someone to do the PI-Setup for you, or you can go out and buy an 500-mini.
Not alone do you need to spend time on buying everything from various sellers, you also need to spend time for getting the software and set it up.
And then comes the question. Do you do it legally or not? Because legally, you also need to figure out how to get the kickstarts.

Or you can simply stop by the store on your way home, and grab a ready made professionally done product in a nice box.
