Hi, I've been trying to setup a way to watch movies on my old win98 pc. I currently want to try using VLC 2.2.8 (newer versions wouldn't work, this one does if I run it with the default compatibility settings in KernelEx with the core update) Watching videos from file, or trying to listen to audio works fine, but I can't get it to read from a dvd or cd (and it's not just the one drive I'm using either, I've tested multiple). When I try to do that, I get the following error message:

Things I've tried:
Other versions of VLC (none fixed the issue)
other compatibility modes in KernelEx (only one I think may work is XP SP2)

I don't really know what the problem is, but it works fine with this version on any other PC I try. If this is a question for the VideoLan forums just let me know, however if anyone knows anything about fixing this I'd greatly appreciate it.

Also I am open to the idea of other DVD players, if yall have any suggestions.

Try opening the video_ts file on the DVD in VLC or try VLC 2.1.5
VLC 3.x requires SSE2

You can also try the following but don't know about DVD support:
https://github.com/RamonUnch/MPlayer-Ringo-builds/releases
https://msfn.org/board/topic/181926-mplayer-b … xp2k3/#comments

But really convert those physical DVD to ISO or mkv (makemkv)

PowerDVD is what you want on 98 IMO.. There were versions on graphics card install disks that usually took advantage of the card in question, like ATi or Voodoo, so if you can find disks for the card you've got then that might work best. Also it came free with optical drives quite often and motherboards also.

I dug out my PowerDVD 3.0 disc with system requirements printed on its top layer:

  • Windows 95/OSR2/98/98SE/Nt4 SP5+/2000/Me
  • 350 MHz Pentium II or above
  • Graphic accelerator with DirectDraw Overlay Support (AGP interface recommended)
  • Sound card (PCI interface recommended)
  • ATAPI/SCSI/Card Bud/1394 DVD-ROM/RAM
  • 32 MB System RAM
  • 20 MB Free HDD space
  • Processor with MMX Technology support

I've never watched DVD on any Win95 computer (my first P2-400 that came with a Toshiba DVD drive -- also my very first DVD drive and is still working! -- had Win98 preinstalled) but I'd say those RAM, HDD, and graphics card requirements were pretty easy to achieve with any system with P2-350 or better CPU.

Requirements of PowerDVD XP 4.0 were slightly higher:

  • Windows 98SE, Me, 2000, or Windows XP
  • 64 MB RAM
  • 40 MB Free HDD space

The rest remained the same.

I've used PowerDVD on a number of systems with K6-2+ CPUs at 500 MHz and some pretty low spec video cards, and it's always been great.

Finishing up a Win98 build with a PIII 450. I want to experiment with DVD because this is about the minimum PC spec for playing DVDs, or so I have read. Unfortunately, I cannot find drivers for either of my IDE DVD-ROM drives. One is a HL GCR-8481B and the other is a Lite-On SOHD-167T. However, I did manage to find a 2006 firmware update for the lite-on. It has a build date in 2004 and the HL in 2002. I am going to give both a try anyway. I have a Power DVD 3.0 ISO and I have the full software package for my video card. I guess I will just roll the dice and see what happens.

I did find a vintage forum thread which discusses the problem of getting DVDs working in Win98 and the consensus was to upgrade to Win98SE: https://ask.metafilter.com/46335/Im-trying-to … with-Windows-98

I just tried PowerDVD v4, it mostly works. I get some choppy frames here and there and can't really figure out what is causing it (probably a hardware limitation, I'm thinking either the sound card or the GPU). Here are my specs:

P3-540 Mhz
640 Mb of ram
Viper V770 (Nvidia TNT 2, 32MB of ram)
ESS ES1869 (I have two of these in the pc, one is integrated into the MOBO, the other I added in so I could get a joystick port that can output midi, all sound routs through the integrated card)
1 CD drive
USB DVD drive (I don't have an IDE drive I can put into this pc at the moment, otherwise I would do so, this very well could be the issue)

Any opinions?

Edit: I did try out hardware acceleration and it did not fix said issue.

Edit: fixed the issue, Found an old IDE dvd drive and installed it, and videos run fine now.
