Nice. Subscribed to your channel and bookmarked your website. Especially those articles (PDFs) of Computer!Totaal are a blast from the past.

So that's similar to MT32?

Cheers,

No. MT-32 is not General MIDI. MT-32 uses Roland's proprietary MIDI format design and came before General MIDI.

Thank you,

In order to play early games that uses MIDI, what is my options with current wavetable daughterboards that dreamblaster designed? Except for the McCake as it needs MT32 firmware which is extra expense to purchase.

Cheers,

Great Northern aka Canada.

The MT32 is a highly configurable sample-based synthesizer. Early games with more advanced MT32 output used the flexibility and programmed their own instruments based on the samples that are available inside the MT32. Those games will not sound correct unless the configuration is correctly interpreted. Up to now, that is only possible by using the original firmware (including the original samples), which is either expensive or illegal.

On the other hand, the MT32 came with 128 pre-configured instruments. If a game is only using these pre-configured instruments, a "MT32 soundbank" for a programmable synthesizer, or a synthesizer switchable to a "MT32 emulation mode" is likely good enough (there is a convention to have the MT32 default instruments on MIDI bank 127, possibly it's part of GS, thus it's a common way to enable MT32 emulation by sending a "switch to bank 127" command to an advanced MIDI synthesize). As the X2 has software-loadable sound banks, I'm very confident you can configure it to play back the default MT32 instruments, which will be good enough for a lot of MT32 games.

Super Street Fighter 2 on E-Wave.
E-Wave has some really strong bass. Fun match for sub-woofer users.
