Hello. I thought I would post a picture of my "Dialup internet nightmare" of a computer area. it's nothing too special but consists of objects from 1979 - 2020

A list of components and stuff

-Main box
a upgraded semi period accurate IBM PC300GL 6282-74U with IBM (Armonk) G42/6540-00N 14"crt monitor from 1997
it consists of
-1997 IBM KB-8923 (Chicony rebrand)
-1998 3Com UsRobotics 56K Winmodem
-Pentium MMX200
-256KB COASt cache
-32MB of PC66 148pin 16MB DIMMS
-1995 SoundBlaster CT2900
-2006 Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 80GB (due to BIOS limitations you can only use 8GB of it)
-2003 52x LG GCR-8521B cd drive
-small pair of speakers from about 2009
-some AMD Socket A heatsink (because of broken socket7 ZIF socket tabs)
-a Windows 95 and NT pc badge recreated by Geekenspiel on ebay
-1996 Windows 95 Osr 2.1
-1998 Gulliemot Maxi gamer 3d2 8mb VooDoo2 3d graphics accelerator

-Other stuff
-1984 Brother PN-4400 Word Processor(Hitachi HD64180RP6 6Mhz 8-bit CPU) spent 22 years outside in harsh Canadian winters and somehow still works
-1995 UsRobotics Sportster 28,800 external faxmodem
-2020 Brother HL-5000D Monochrome Laser Printer (Parallel and USB)
-1979 Magnasonic (Samsung) TNT-59 5" B/W CRT TV AM/FM Radio (not much is known about this)

-Hp envy 4520 (It doesn't deserve to be on here because it sucks but I put it on anyway

The Internet does actually work(kinda) the modems are there for faxes, E-mail, BBS browsing and to keep me from getting spam calls

This is currently where the bits are wrangled... it was sorta meant to be my modern computer area, transitioning eventually to a study and reference area with all my sciency and tech pubs on the shelves, with probably a better desk . However, at the moment, I'm letting it organically develop a cyberpunk theme... but I'm not sure what it needs to add the final je ne sais quois... like these... https://imgur.com/a/37FiN ... more bundles of random wiring? a touch of neon? Yea you have to be careful with what you are acquiring . It's how I ended up with a radio from 1979. I found it at a thrift store saw it had a CRT and went "well if I don't buy, it will probably end up in a landfill or something" also nice PC AT.

Yea you have to be careful with what you are acquiring . It's how I ended up with a radio from 1979. I found it at a thrift store saw it had a CRT and went "well if I don't buy, it will probably end up in a landfill or something" also nice PC AT.

That is one convincing clone, thought It was a PC AT with a 3rd party EGA monitor. 😁

Not exactly "my" computing area but I thought I'd show it off anyway since I spent Sunday afternoon there, messing around with my portable (which makes any area a computing area, really).

This is my wife's desk that I made. Well, maybe *made* is a bit of an overstatement because it's basically a big piece of wall-mounted plywood with linoleum cover and an old drawer and a leg. Mounting the drawer was actually the real challenge here because it's quite antique and not straight at all.

This is my study, with my dual 800 MHz P-III retro PC (512 MB RAM, GeForce 4 Ti4200 AGP graphics, SBAWE64 Gold ISA sound card, Intel 100 Mb PCI Ethernet card) running OPENSTEP 4.2. This has an Adapted SCSI 2940 card with a Jaz drive, a GoTek floppy drive emulator, a DVD-RW optical drive, as well as a CompactFlash to IDE adapter, so I can boot different vintage operating systems from different CF cards. I have cards with Puppy Linux, BeOS, OPENSTEP for Mach, Win98SE and Win2K Pro.

Below that is a 2012 model fully-loaded aluminium Mac Pro tower with dual Xeon processors, 64 GB RAM, PCIE SSDs, ATI Radeon RX580 GPU and so on. To the bottom right is my modern PC running a Core i7 9700K, 32 GB RAM and an NVIDIA RTX 3080 graphics card. This is all on a MicroATX motherboard fitted inside a Corsair Carbide Air 240 black cube case which somewhat resembles a NeXTcube. Compact, quiet and powerful.

My main rig. Fun part about it is this isn't just a "retro" rig. This IS the main show. There is no modern computer off to the side. In fact this post was created right from the PC you see here. It's just a 500Mhz Pentium III system. Nothing super special or anything but for website authoring, email, web-news and a small tad of gaming it does a fine job.

Here's my area.

Basically, me and my wife turned the attic into a mix of offices / entertainment area and she allowed me to have a U-shaped desk with some of my rigs. The idea behind it was to create an effect of evolution as I rotate from right to left with the builds becoming more modern at each step. It's currently not too bad, but because I'm not a very organized person, it's usually quite chaotic with spare parts, game cases, cables, etc.

Apart from the Deskpro XE and the Presario 5000, all other PCs are changed depending on what I'm playing by one of these:

I tried to find some stickers or anything that would identify them, but no luck. In my country (Portugal) these were quite common in the mid-2000's. These were given to me with systems ranging from P4 2.6 to Pentium D 3.4, so they are from around that time. The coloured bezels are easily interchangeable. In fact, the blue bezel was originally from the white case.

That's unfortunate 🙁 but I've seen them in used markets across Europe as well. The one that I had back in the day was my first "Gaming PC" (coming from a office-oriented) with P4 2.4, 440MX, 256MB... At that time, for me it was wonderful running all the games with that kind of fluidity 😁 (the days that we didn't knew about framerates, frametimes, etc...). Now I'm putting together my first retro-pc-rig, and I'm unsure if I'll use something to match that era (regarding the case) or I'll just buy a new case with fans/better airflow, etc...
