Actually it is NOT Christ mass in Denmark. It is yule. There is a big difference 😀 but yeah it is this time of year where peoples blast out carrols. Including one I try to escape from. Sadly I could not escape it yesterday evening in the bus with a wham.

Yule is the old name for the winter solstice celebration, Saturnalia is the name that the Romans used for their winter solstice celebration. Christ-mass is the name people wants to point is the where the birth of a certain fellow went "Hello my name is etc." but that certain fellow was not born on either the 24. or the 25 of December. Yeah in certain parts of Denmark it is indeed snowing right now .

If we have to be 100% correct, then it is "Jul". However it translates to Christmas in English. 😉

But yeah. Translations are strange. Just the way that Nissen were translated during the years.
Neils became Nis became Nissen.

That certain fellow were not born during the winther time, the weather are too different.
The reason why it is the 24'th, is the Roman emperor did not want to Christian party to be too close to the pagan party.
Also we open gifts on the 24'th here, and not the 25'th, because when the sun "went down" the day was over for the vikings.
And because the Christians said after the day was over, then the Vikings thought "Sun down, yay, presents can be opened".

Brostenen. The word jul is not translated into "Christ-mass" it is mistranslated into Christmas. jul is in fact Yule. Glædelig Jul is erroneously translated into "merry Christmas" , when in fact the real translation of the sentence, is "joyous Yule" 😀 (sorry mate, I am a nerd just like you) 😀 And yeah the certain fellow would have frozen big time at the time (December) in Israel. Also the year is wrong, if we take the constellation up in the sky to match the ancient scriptures.

But yeah happy holidays.

Yes. The most accurate translation of Jul to English, is in fact Yule. But we don't say that here in Denmark. You know and I know, we say Jul.
But you need to look at it differently, to know what I was trying to say.

We have Yule and Christmas in English. Yup. But if Yule is Jul in Danish, then what is Christmas in Danish then?
We don't exactly go around and say happy or merry Jesus's birthday do we? 😉 There is the old Viking "party" and then the Christian "party".
And we use Jul for both, though the Christian version is the most used these days.
Basically the most correct translation these days are, are that Jul in English are Christmas.
And as it is the Christian that we mostly have, still with some old viking traditions, then we have stuff like first Sunday in advent and Santa Lucia.
For the old traditions, we eat pork and we drink tons of alcohol for the Christmas lunch. We open presents in the evening of the 24'th.

But you know all these things. The question is still. Is it mostly the Christian version or the Asa version? If Asa, then Yule else it is Christmas.

Christmas in Danish is Krist messe. Hence the reason why I write it as Christ-mass. Also I personally hate, every time some jerk spouts the bullshit , that Yule/jul is Christian. Which it is absolutely not. Christ-mass is Christian, and stolen from Yule and Saturnalia and other solstice celebrations. I am tired as a history nerd, and as an atheist hearing the bollocks every year from some "high and mighty" person, that spouts the bullshit. That it is Christian.
When it is absolutely not Christian. Just like Denmark is not a Christian nation and for that matter build upon Christianity. Also I despise the whole commercialisation of this month, and the hysteria I have experienced over the years. I just want December to end, and be over. I love the Yule as in being their for your family and friends and wishing them good tidings and all that. I hate the bullshit with if some steps on your toes, then spin around, and instead of saying " I am sorry" they smile insanely and says "joyous Yule" , during this month. Thankfully most people, thanks to Corona knows not to be at your tail-end so they can not be a bell-end about it . Sorry for ranting mate, I do wish people happy holidays, happy winter solstice, or Yule.

In German, the words Christmesse oder Christmette, obviously closely related to "Christmas", still exist but they only refer to the church service held at Christmas or, more specifically, the Hours themselves sung during the night of Dec. 24th.

The holiday is referred to as Weihnachten from Middle High German wīenacht which just means "holy night". More interestingly though, the singular form Weihnacht is, at least where I live, rarely used and sounds to my ears old-fashioned and/or poetic. When people refer to the holiday they use the dative case plural Weihnachten, which is holdover from the MHG phrase "ze wihe nachten" at/during the holy nights, inferring that there wasn't just one but several. It sorta makes sense since there are three liturgical holidays or if you think of the Twelve Days of Christmas but I like to think that this is a holdover from pagan times when they had multiple winter solstice feasts from late Fall into February.

Anyway, the more I learn about Christmas the more pagan it seems. If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, past, say, the 45th parallel, it's easy to see why people would do *anything* and call on any and all Gods or Ancestors for any number of nights to make the dark time of year more enjoyable. Happy Winter Solstice and many Holy Nights to everyone!

I'm a Christian, but if we're getting esoteric about it I've always preferred the Chinese take:

The idea of a turning point arises from the fact that after the dark lines have pushed all of the light lines upward and out of the hexagram, another light line enters the hexagram from below. The time of darkness is past. The winter solstice brings the victory of light. This hexagram is linked with the eleventh month, the month of the solstice.

After a time of decay comes the turning point. The powerful light that has been banished returns. There is movement, but it is not brought about by force. The upper trigram K'un is characterized by devotion; thus the movement is natural, arising spontaneously. For this reason the transformation of the old becomes easy. The old is discarded and the new is introduced. Both measures accord with the time; therefore no harm results. Societies of people sharing the same views are formed. But since these groups come together in full public knowledge and are in harmony with the time, all selfish separatist tendencies are excluded, and no mistake is made. The idea of RETURN is based on the course of nature. The movement is cyclic, and the course completes itself. Therefore it is not necessary to hasten anything artificially. Everything comes of itself at the appointed time. This is the meaning of heaven and earth.

All movements are accomplished in six stages, and the seventh brings return. Thus the winter solstice, with which the decline of the year begins, comes in the seventh month after the summer solstice; so too sunrise comes in the seventh double hour after sunset. Therefore seven is the number of the young light, and it arises when six, the number of the great darkness, is increased by one. In this way the state of rest gives place to movement.

After emigrating from California to Florida, I'm struck by the oddity that the seasons are backwards here.
In CA it was warm and dry all summer, but rained all winter.
In FL it rains every day all summer (which I find very depressing), but only occasionally in the winter.
So to my way of thinking, December is summer in Florida.

I've never seen a place that has such heavy Christmas decorating as here in FL. It's weird given how not cold it is, but I guess that just makes people want to decorate even more to set the mood.
Lots of people are decorating after Halloween. If you wait for Thanksgiving to buy decorations, everything is sold out.
