Today I managed to snag a working 5.25 Mitsubishi FDD for $5, and 16MB of 30 pin ram for $10. So now I have a way to read just the driver disk for my almost-working serial mouse both kinds of floppies, and have way too much ram for what a SX2-66 can actually run.

WOW!!

I take it that’s a good deal? Or are those drives rare?

The machine is gorgeous.

Good deal? For 5$ it's a total steal!!

Sometimes everything falls into place and the result is beauty.

Thanks. The pentium that the system usually has installed in it is currently in an ESD bag, while I play around with my 486.

Mine has a bad case of yellowing needing a retrobrite cure (thanks to all the nice chaps that made YT tutorials).

Could you post a pic of yours? I' like to see one in good shape.

This definitely doesn’t count as retro at only 11-12 years old but I’m thinking future retro for a period correct 2010 build 😀

• Intel Xeon x5670
• Asus Sabertooth X58 with i7 950
• 8GB Crucial Ballistix Elite DDR3-1866Mhz

I still have similar configs at work (with the same motherboard) used as a daily Windows 10 machines...

Also "retro" means new (just styled as old) so it doesn't count now and it won't count ever... 😀

I remember like 15 years ago seeing people mention this about Socket 3 PCs because these were build in the millions and were just massproduced cheap junk but they were wrong and had an apparent lack of foresight.
There is no clear (and perhaps even correct) definition on what is retro and what is not when it comes to old computer parts, but it is everchanging in a world that used to evolve so rapidly.

Personally I'd count a PC as retro if it predates PCI-E (so AGP and older).

I usually use the 20-year benchmark definition for ‘vintage / retro’, give or take 2-3 years depending on which side of the bed I wake up on.

Failing that, anything with an IDE or SCSI cable will usually do it for me.

By my definition, anything can still run WinXP without homebrew patches, is retro.
So it includes those overkill builds based on LGA1155 and GTX285.

Core 2 Quad still has IDE. So does that count?

So x79 (LGA2011) is fair game for retro as well?

Well.. To some this latest purchase of mine is probably not retro, but to me this is one of the fastest cards in the universe that can run Windows 98SE so it is pretty damn retro. This is my third X800 family PCI-E card, one X850 PRO currently installed in my LGA775 Core2Duo E4600 Win98SE PC, and two backups: a FireGL V7100 and now this, an X800GTO.

Got a Terratec branded ESS Solo-1.

Did some preliminary testing and the card works great in SBPro mode. However, it seems that native AudioDrive compatibility in DOS games is kinda hit and miss. Tomb Raider worked, but Heroes of Might and Magic 2, WarCraft 2 and Mortal Kombat 3 didn't work. Furthermore, DOS games were unable to access the enhanced ESFM mode on the Solo-1. I guess that's the price you have to pay for going with a PCI sound card.

PC#1: Pentium MMX 166 / Soyo SY-5BT / S3 Trio64V+ / Voodoo1 / YMF719 / AWE64 Gold / SC-155
PC#2: AthlonXP 2100+ / ECS K7VTA3 / Voodoo3 / Audigy2 / Vortex2
PC#3: Athlon64 3400+ / Asus K8V-MX / 5900XT / Audigy2
PC#4: i5-3570K / MSI Z77A-G43 / GTX 970 / X-Fi

In the 90's I had ESS Maestro-1 (ES1948) and I loved it (I still have this card). I believe I have Solo-1 (ES1938) too but I may be mistaken. I'm looking for ESS Allegro (ES1988/1989 - ie. Diamond Sonic Impact) though.

Here's my case:

It houses my 3/486 build (Jetway OPTI495DX 3/486WB, Promise EIDE/Dual FDD cache VLB, ET4000/w32p VLB, ISA I/O, HardMPU, Aztech Sound Galaxy NX Pro non-16, 8GB CF (CF to IDE 3.5" bracket), Mitsubishi 360K drive (drive D), Epson SD-800 (drive A is the 3.5", drive B is the 5.25"), Panasonic CR-563-B (connected to the sound card), SAAYM (CMS/GameBlaster clone + YM-YM-2151), 3Com 3C515TX ISA, 386DX-33, 387-33, and 8MB RAM).

Had a 386DX/486DLC build before and it was only $10 back in 2020.

Has slight yellowing on the right, however, it's not that bad.

The turbo and reset button style reminds me of those DTK Peer computers.

I had several of these. Extremally popular model. Right now I have very similar (which I want to get rid off in case (lol) somebody is interested -> link in the signature).

Got this over the weekend - I paid a pretty penny - 5 of the 6 mice did not work, and I can't get the two green 486 boards to post.

The Conner 42 Mb drive is dead - had to smack it for it to even spin, it was a $5 gamble, turns out I should have bought a couple beers instead 😜

55VQVaq.jpg

Replacement mice are coming, which is nice, as I have 9 systems in my basement, most of them will need a mouse to be complete.
