Are Pentium I and Pentium 2 CPUs really made out of gold?
Are Pentium I and Pentium 2 CPUs really made out of gold?
Most CPUs use gold in them for pins, contact pads, and the wires from the CPU core/s to the pins/pads in older CPUs, its also why there is a market for large batches of old CPUs and ICs for gold reclaim. Pentium CPUs are old enough to have gold pins and gold wiring, Pentium 2 is also old enough to have a good bit of gold in the contact pads too.
No.
They are not made out of gold.
The pins and contact pads are gold plated to reduce contact resistance, plating thickness ~ 0.2µm
The silicon is connected with gold wires, thickness ~ 20µm
Right to repair is fundamental. You own it, you're allowed to fix it.

Pentium Pro had relatively big amount of gold (small wonder with that huge CPU size), so people actively hunted them for scraping. Probably still was stupid idea, due to amount of chemicals required to extract it.
I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.

Aqua Regia isn't a pleasant chemical to work with, neither is cyanide if going the "Death Wish" method, that said ..I do wonder if having a small side hobby of gold reclaim for hardware no longer able to be rescued might not be a bad thing. (Likely cheaper to just send it to a recycler)
Still the thought of scrapping a working Pentium Pro makes me cringe, if it works I would rather keep it or hand it to someone who could use it.
Pentium Pro has 0.3 grams of gold. Nowadays it’s actually worth much more as a fully functional CPU… Too bad that many people did not get the memo and they keep destroying them.
