This is the first I've heard, specifically, of Intel's 12th gen chips. I had heard they would soon catch up with AMD. I had hoped my Xeon W-2140b frankenputer would still be able to hold its own against such a chip (which in reality is ludicrous if you really thought about it). Your chip rates a bit more then double on passmark. I didn't pay >600$ for mine, about a third. It's still a respectable frankenputer I suspect. The specs are confusing though.

I think I'll stick with ws/server architectures as there always seems to be some sort of deal if you poke around. Rabid fanboys love their core series rigs, no offense. If I had the chutzpah I imagine I'd buy 1 too. In fact the desire to be a nose ahead is what caused me to investigate options in the server realm.

Yesterday I got a HP T610 thin client. It'll take over the role of the T5740 I had as a DNS filter for my home network. It only had a 32bit CPU and a tiny 2GB IDE-44 SSD. I didn't mind the CPU, but it was cheaper to buy a new device than to upgrade the storage in the old one.

It came with Windows 7 preinstalled, I wanted to do some tests before wiping it, but for some reason nothing wanted to install. Maybe I'll try later with XP if it has drivers for that. I was considering buying another one to have as an emulator box/Jellifin client.

At a later date I'll add a 2.5" hard drive to the T5740 and set it up as a dedicated file server for my retro VLAN. Now I just use network sharing with my XP/Vista dual boot build, but that's not ideal.

Something didn't look right as I:be been looking into every TC I hear of (looking out for those with 32 bit CPU's). According to this:

You misunderstood. The T5740 had 32bit CPU, it has an Atom N260 or N270. I'm fairly sure mine isn'T N280. The T610 has a 64bit AMD CPU and I knew it from the start.

Ah gotcha.

Saw a passively cooled Radeon 7750 for 10 Eur, so I grabbed it. Planning on using it for either a multimedia PC hooked up to my TV or as a replacement for my home office computer, which currently has a a Geforce card running Ubuntu.

Has a strange issue - it wont post unless I have something plugged into the DVI port. It will run with even a DVI-VGA adapter plugged in, but if it's only DP/HDMI, it just gives a black screen. All the ports seem to work fine as I can get multiple displays working at once, but I have to keep something (even an adapter) plugged into the DVI port for it to work.

Tried it on 2 boards - Socket 775 and 1156 and both behave the same. Any ideas what might be wrong here?

The card won't "boot" or the whole computer? Is this under Windows 10? I realize you've expressed your intent to use it with Ubuntu. I've gotten older MSI cards to work with W10, with issues. Always some kind of issue. The card it would seem signals it's alive, even an adapter does the same. Apparently the driver looks for that. That's my guess.

OS is not the problem - I'm testing it without a drive plugged in. It just doesn't POST unless there is something plugged into the DVI port. Once it starts up (with a DVI-VGA adapter plugged in), I can get a display on all the display outputs.

So once it starts up and you get display, can you remove the DVI-VGA adapter then or it must be plugged in all the time?

Have you tried flash a new BIOS to the graphics card?

It sounds like the card always detects a monitor as being connected to the DVI port for some reason, and assigns it as main monitor output to me.

Yes, it continues to work after I unplug the adapter. As for the bios - I've downloaded all the files and will attempt a flash later on.

I doubt it. If I plug in a monitor to the DVI port after starting up, it still doeskin send any signals

Yes, if it boots with the dongle plugged in, the other ports work just fine, even after I unplug the dongle.

It's almost certainly a monitor detection issue. I'd just leave the DVI/VGA dongle plugged in 😀

Finally snagged some DDR5 2X16GB 5600Mhz C36 from Corsair. Been waiting a while. Now after I get my move done this winter I will be able to get my 12900k build started.

Hit some stores for the sales, didn't see much... grabbed a spare PSU from Staples for $40 CDN on clearance, Cooler Master MWE 80+ Bronze 500, not fancy but no-nonsense unit that I believe the ratings for. Has floppy and 3x5.25 power plugs, so might get into a semi-vintage or modern system. Might just swap it into the C2Q system I scored a few months back, since I haven't got into that PSU to chase out the spiders and leaf litter (only visible problem from sitting outside a while)

Also grabbed a network/phone jack crimper and punch and stripper combo tool for $7... I've only been meaning to buy one for 25 years.

Couple of years ago bought a set of Edifier 1700BT speakers for my retro pc's, they work/look great.
