That is near-enough my exact first computer, the heart of my youth's PC nostalgia. Obtained new in late 1991.

A PC Direct 286 with 52MB Quantum HDD, which, a couple of years later I had upgraded with an SBPro 2, then a 486 motherbard + an SX-33 processor (which I "overclocked" by jumper setting to 40Mhz), and eventually a Cirrus Logic VLB card.

Then in 1995 I gave it away to a friend, who within a year had gone off PCs and passed it on, and so I never saw or thought of it again. Until many years later, when grown old enough that it's memory brings the intense nostalgia and longing for our youths which we all know.

It's almost mind-bending to imagine that somehow that actual machine made it's way through time, all those long years and decades, and is still going to this day - perhaps in the hands of somebody just like you.

I hope you treat "the old girl" well. 😀 It's probably had almost as long and complex a journey as we have ourselves.

Ohhh yeeahhhhh, nice score. Go the whole monty, the full way, the whole 9 wax, the full ball of yards, and bless it with a pair of 1.4S ... but yah another SL5LW is good too when them's maybe a fair chunk of change now, never know, might spot them in a $20 scrap lot.... it is kind of scratching for percents at the top end when you've got 85-90% right there. ... If the P2B-DS gets necromanced here, it might just get 1.13 Ghz coppermines on it, because that's what I've got.

The cool thing is that it’s also got it’s Pc Direct original 15” screen a cool little number with its own lcd panel on the front. Displays details about the res it’s currently running in like refresh rates and horizontal and vertical sync rates.

The old girl will be well cared for.

Finally got my PS2 30001 up and running. Installed a new power/eject ribbon cable on the switch and the board, put it back together with the cable out of the way this time, and it powers on and it runs.

Both my 30001 and 50001 have the silent fan mods installed and they sound a lot quieter than before.

Next up: replacing the HDDs with SSDs to make it more quieter, even.

I'd not bother with an SSD, really. if you can a laptop sata drive in there, you'll never really hear it while still being so fast that Ace Combat 04 missions load instantly.

Weren't the 50001 silent by design? I remember the 30000/35000/37000/39000 being loud but the 50000s were really silent.

The fan on my 50001 was a bit noisy to my ears, but it wasn't that terrible. The 30001 made me lose my marbles. Had to fix the fan on my 30001 since after I put it back together, the fan decided to not spin up and the PS2 overheated for a moment. Turned out the cable was too close to the blades and all is well. Gotta do further testing before I set it up in my basement for Guitar Hero and Rock Band.

Today was a repair day. I fixed some broken SMD capacitors on a memory stick and some Radeon graphics cards that were in my pile of things to fix.

Mmm, that 7200 repair was nice. Shame that I (very likely) threw my 9000 AIW away, would've surely loved to fix it using your techniques.

I played the Windows 3.0 port of SimAnt in a virtual machine yesterday. It was awesome.

Getting the band back together. I mean, getting all the original parts for this Highscreen AT together. Not completely original, i'm having some problems with the Sound Boostar 3D (AD1816AJS) in Windows 95... But the Packard Bell branded Aztech with OPL3 is working fine. So that troubleshooting is for another time.

Gotta love those Noctua fans. I cannot believe how much quieter my PS2s are with those fans.

Also, if anyone is planning on doing the Noctua fan mod on a PS2, I recommend wrapping electrical tape around the connectors to prevent shorts.

Yeah, it's been pretty dead lately. I have nothing left from my vintage hardware stash so hopefully some others here will continue the tradition in the future.
