Howdy vogons i just came into possession of a nec pc3d engine graphics card , I was just wondering if it would work on a ibm compatible pc?

And not just a nec pc98?
Basically im asking if its okay to drop into a regular pci slot?

And with the right drivers would it operate just like a nec power vr?
Thanks.

Later PC98 systems were basically just x86 Pentium machines anyway, but this card was marked for PC and Windows 95 in the first place, so yes, it should work.

Here's the box:

Yes and not. Them still have the non-standard memory/interrupt/io PC98 magic, and its chipset is a NEC custom one which has support for CBus cards in addition to the Intel Northbridge bundled PCI controller (don't confuse with Corollary C-Bus server bus). These Pentium PC98's still need special bus VxD drivers which only come with Win9x PC98 editions... Or an special HAL in case of WinNT based OSs.

Is similar to the first SGIs based in x86 architecture. The only x86 there was the CPU... The chipset was a custom strange thing... And the firmware was microsoft/SGI ARCS, which had nothing to do with standard x86 bioses.

Talking from the experience of dealing with these in ReactOS.

Well in this case the card seems to work fine and appears to be compatible , I got it working in tomb raider with the right patch.

Btw are there any other dos games that support power vr cards or is this the only one? , I'd imagine there only be a handful of them.

It's the only DOS game, but there are plenty of other PowerVR games. See list.

An early 3D accelerator from the days before dominance of D3D and OpenGL in the games market. Like the original Voodoo1, just a different API and a bit slower.

Isn't that just another PowerVR PCX1 card like Videologic Apocalypse 3D?
Not saying it isn't cool or special. But it's functionally the same thing, right?

That's correct. There is no performance or difference in terms of features.

What's interesting is that for the PCX1 version of the NEC 3D Engine they mounted a heatsink, but the PCX2 version this is omitted (the Matrox M3D and Apocalypse 3D cards never had any heatsink). That is also how you can easily tell the 3D Engine (PCX1) and 3D Engine 2 (PCX2) apart. They use the same PCB.
