After trying many different hardware and software configurations, I have only once managed to get this game to run as I remember it back in the day. I have run out of things to try, so if anybody has any ideas I would very much appreciate hearing them.

I've tried both the original disk version and the 1.5 patched version across each of these setups. Here's what I have tried thus far...

Pentium II 250, 96mb RAM, Windows 98se, TNT2 M64 with driver version 40.72. (same results with mx4000 and fx5200) = game menu loads but is very slow and laggy, music lags and cuts out. Computer hangs when loading a track. Higher driver versions result in a corrupted and unusable game menu.

Celeron 366, 512mb RAM, Windows 98se, fx5200 with 40.72 drivers (same results with TNT2 and mx4000) = game crashes after intro videos and before menu.

^ as above, but with ATI rage xl = menu and races load fine however graphics in game are corrupt, car model broken, white haze over everything, missing hud, etc

^ as above but with S3 trio64 - similar results to the ATI rage xl, albeit slightly more playable.

Core 2 duo, 2gb Ram, geforce 8600, Windows XP with xp game patches - game loads but runs way too fast to be playable and in-game graphics are broken.

The only hardware i've ever had success with was the Pentium II system with an s3 virge card, however it only ran in the lowest graphical settings and I would like to be able to play this game at its best. I've tried tweaking all the video options in game on the setups that allowed me to get as far as the menu but nothing I did made much of a difference. I've also tried running it on my main windows 10 PC following the guides on this forum and had no luck there either (probably me not setting something up right though).

Anyone have any suggestions as to driver versions that might work or anything else I could do to get this damn game running?

you may try an older nvidia driver, sometimes newer drives just break compatibility with old games
you should find something like the detonator drivers for the tnt2, and for the fx5200 you may use 45.23

Works for me with 30.82 on a tnt2 m64, 31.40 and maybe 44.03 on a geforce 4 8x, and maybe the geforce 2 ti with 30.82/45.23, can't remember and possibly not the latter version. But there are various visual bugs across all these, not really the ideal hardware for the game.

For visual quality, the matrox g400 is probably the best thing for it.

Thanks for the advice guys, i'll try some of these drivers you've suggested. Some of the drivers in the 4x.xx range didn't seem to detect my video card at all, even though they were supposed to support it. But i'll have another go and see. As for the American\European patches, I have tried both of those (try one, reinstall, try the other) and it didn't seem to make any difference.

I've run the game with more than a dozen video cards. Nvidia's are generally at the bottom for compatibility. To abandon them is the best way forward for this game. Also abandon anything that isn't the matrox g400, or run the software renderer on a fast cpu.

Following the advice of weidum, I tried the 45.23 drivers again. Last time I tried them was with the TNT2 and the installer told me it couldn't find any nvidia cards. But I tried it again with the fx5200 and what do you know, they installed just fine. And even better Colin McRae rally runs smoothly at high detail now. I feel a bit silly not trying that earlier, but thanks for the help none the less.

yeah, sometimes you must test every driver to see a difference in performance or compatibility
45.23 is one of the best driver for low performance and dx7 cards, specially under XP
