Around 1.5 years back, I had watched a lot of YouTube videos in 8K. I had even one downloaded in 8K around 5 months back. Now if I get back to any of the 8K titled video, even the one I downloaded in 8K, they all miss the 8K option. The maximum in them is 4K. Now I don't know if it's just something from my ISP or my GPU/CPU or browser. Please provide your inputs.

It might be something related to ISP trying to optimize bandwidth during "home office era"...

If you are logged in, maybe it's overridden by bandwidth limitation settings on your account.

Here's a video available in 8K for me, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zf3bDpdhUNc - does the 8K work for you?

Possibly cdn caching issue?

All I know is that when I upload videos to YT they're always compressed to hell so I stopped uploading.
I don't think it's your provider as they don't meddle with that sort of thing.
The reason why the 8K video isn't available anymore is probably because YT's algorithm decided the popularity of that video didn't warrant the serverspace and bandwith.

I rather limit the res to something low due to meh internet, yet when I do it many times is forgotten or over road to a higher resolution, would love limiting to 480p on all the apps but most don’t support, many times mandatory advertising will freeze the app

I was thinking the same thing, but I don't think my ISP would gradually look at every 8K video and disable the 8K option one by one. As I said, the number of 8K videos has decreased over time.

I tried in an incognito tab and the same exists.

It doesn't

Most people are watching them on a phone, and the higher resolution like doesn't matter on a phone.

I am doing on my main PC. My phone isn't capable enough to display anything over 1080p. On the YouTube desktop site on phone, it still give me the option of 4K at max IIRC.

Could be many things, but my money is on something wrong with your browser configuration.

TBH, I don't change much with my browser configurations. I just set the default SE on Edge, install uBlock Origin and TouchVPN, and I am on my way to work.

Do you use Chrome, I could go back there but I don't want RAM eaters anymore.

The 8K option is there for me, both with and without my VPN.

Edit: That was when I used Firefox - with Edge it only goes up to 4K.

Knowing YT and Google's interest in gathering information, I like to think that all the 8K material is still on the servers, at least.
Because, once in a blue moon, YT likes to restart converting (re-encode) the original source material to a shiny new codec that's currently in fashion.
Something like this happened when YT switched from Flash videos to VP8/9, I vaguely remember.

How very interesting! You know, I was actually wondering about YouTube's lack of 8K content recently, but it was so scarce to begin with that I never connected its disappearance with my recent switch to Edge.

But yeah - the 8K stream is definitely available in Chrome and Firefox, but not Edge. Oh well, no biggie. I'll still use Edge as my primary browser (even though in the past, I always watched the 8K stream (if available) on my 4K display, just to take advantage of the higher bitrate).

Out of curiosity I had a look and it indeed shows up for me. It's only available in the AV1 codec, so I wonder if that might have anything to do with it.

Ohhhhh, didn't chrome et al bump the minimum openGL support level for acceleration in the last few months, and that declares what hardware supported codecs are available.

I had tests today on Chrome and got 8K resolution back but the results were rather surprising. On 4K, the GPU usage gets around 20% and the CPU stays at 2% to 3%. As soon as I bump the resolution to 8K, GPU usage drops to 0% and the CPU is constantly at 80% usage.

Hardware acceleration is checked in Chrome.

The GPU might preferentially go for VP9 for 4K which it can handle, but the 8K video is only offered in AV1 and so it falls back to software decoding.

Have you tried the h264ify extension/add-on? It's available for both Firefox and Chromium-based browsers. It forces h.264 in YouTube.

In my experience, it's a good solution for systems that can hardware-accelerate h.264 video, but nothing newer.
