I recently got GF4 MX440 by Gainward and all benchmarks fail to run with newest drivers + directx 8.1 - I had to go back to ~40 version. Anyone got similar experience? Weird as my GF2 MX (as I remember) works fine with latest drivers and it is older.

I have a GF4-MX-4000 low-profile PCI card. It has a surprisingly good image quality but I have some compatibility issues in some older games. I currently use "NVIDIA Display Driver for Windows 9x version 4.14.10.5664, 03/03/2004". Is there a better driver for that card?

Maybe not a big help, but on my GF3 I found out that the 23.11 driver works best at the moment. I think the older drivers work much better than the newer version. Try to find out which is the oldest version suppporting your GPU and start with that , if this does not help try one version higher. It helped me with my issues.

So I got an Inno3D GeForce MX440 8X card now (third candidate for 2D side alongside Matrox M3D). However I'm not sure all is well with it, as Direct3D seems not to be working properly.

For some reason on my Win98SE setup, DirectX 9.0a seems to have got installed. If I try the Display > Direct3D tests on that (they worked on the Radeon) it just crashes NVDD32.DLL and reduces Windows to 640x480 res. This is using the "preferred" 45.23 drivers from VogonsDrivers (with either the "nVidia Detonator/FW Driver v45.23 Win9X (Gf FX)" or the "nVidia Detonator/FW Driver v45.23 Win9X setup" versions). Any ideas? Maybe some newer drivers for Dx9? Which should I try?

My PC spec: Win10 64bit, i7-4970K (not overclocked), KFA2 GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER, Creative Soundblaster ZXr, 16GB RAM, Asus Z97-A motherboard, NZXT 410 case, ROG Swift GSYNC monitor

They are not similar. They are identical.

Incorrect.

I have both. The oldest driver (28.32 - the earliest GeForce4 driver) cannot talk to the MX440-8X. There are significant enough changes in the silicon (NV17 vs NV18, NV25 vs NV28).

If you have an "8x" version of the TI4xxx or the MX4xx then the earliest driver you can use is 43.45.

I don't know that there are games that work with 28.32 that don't work with 43.45, but I personally use a GeForce 3 Ti500 modded with Rivatuner NVSTRAP to be a GeForce3, and it works with drivers 12.41, which is necessary for a DirectX 6 or 7 Win9x build. So unlike the GeForce4, all GeForce3 silicon is in fact the same, but just differ in the quality of the IC used, the higher binned ones being used on higher end models.

I know you weren't replying to me, but that sounds like a good pointer for me too, as 43.25 wasn't working.

I have the AGP8x versions of both cards (made by MSI) and mine work with 40.72 WHQL drivers without any modifications. Been using those for over two years now, so it's not some fluke.

Perhaps the minimum required driver version varies for different brands or by production date.

28.32 works with any GF4MX on Win9x, just feed it generic GeForce 4 MX 440 from device list and it will work.

I stand corrected, the earliest version for support for NV18 and NV28 is 40.71. But the point still stands, if you try anything earlier it won't work.

Again, incorrect. And that's why the "8x" versions of GeForce4 are not a good choice for older builds.

Stick to vanilla MX440.

Any idea why Direct3D on my Ino3D GeForce MX450 8X is crashing DxDiag? What's the latest driver this card supports? I wondered if 43.25 is too early for DirectX9a (that I think might have been installed with soundcard drivers or some other drivers I tried from a previous graphics card, as the games I ran pre-date DX9)

I see three large 16V 470uF capacitors at the top left portion of this model card... Replace them, and consider testing the three small ones at the bottom right.

I'm not really an electronics kinda person. Is it highly likely to be capacitors?

I think we've got a soldiering iron but don't think I have any testing gear, what would be needed? Multimeter or something? I'm more tempted to get a refund as seller said it's working (but they also said no returns)
