SL74Q? Not sure that I have many P4 celerons, doubt I have that one.

It's the highest speed 400fsb P4 I thought, 3Ghz Northwood.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

You're right. No idea why I thought it was a celeron 😀

I didn't have it on my spreadsheet, just added the basic specs from CPU-World.

Not got a 400 MHz Northwood faster than 2.5.

IIRC, socket 423-478 adapters only work with Willamette based cores, at least officially. It would also make sense, since no Northwood was made in 423, that no 423 board supports Northwood voltages ..

Please use the "quote" option if asking questions to what I write - it will really up the chances of me noticing 😀

That makes sense. I'll find out when I get the right board set up 😀

The fastest northwood with 400 fsb was a 2.8

Fastest NW celeron was 2.8, P4 went up to 3.0. SL6YH and SL74Q

Ah yes, insert SL74Q

Bah, just overclock Northwood 2.4 to 3 Ghz.

I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.

I got two computers recently but I'm splitting them into two posts. First is this very tiny KLH "Champion" 386SX computer, which makes all the right noises when powered on but for some reason refuses to output a video signal. It beeps twice but given how obscure this computer is, I have no idea what two beeps means. Has anyone else ever even seen one of these before?

Thumb wiggle all the SIMMs and scrunch all the socketed chips down and give her another whirl, that one's a little cutie. ... In general unless you got super unlucky that model of HDD lasts and lasts.

edit: speeling, English muckerfother, do you speak it?

bought four 1M x 9 parity simms for 4MB total for rebuilding my KT4000 memory card as the 1MB part (using 256K chips) is not working (fails when counting during POST). Already mapped the layout of 1MB x 1 chips pins and they cannot be used with one 4mb 72 pin simm as it needs 2 x 9 bits and they also have 4 cas seperate lines too. Even this is 32 bit memory card, it is organized into 2 banks of 18 chips due to how card is designed.

Getting 36 x 1MB x 1 bit DIP chips are impossible hence this odd repair.

Cheers,

Great Northern aka Canada.

A good home for one or two (or indeed three) SCA SCSI drives. Much better than messing around with flimsy 80p-68p adapters.

I probably should remove the motherboard for a proper inspection, that seems like a good idea.

Got a new toy, hardware to attack my retro hardware with... a newish multimeter... a local biz that deals in returns and misdirected freight was having a clearance sale and I went for a look see, this was only $5 CDN so I grabbed it. Thought, "Yah it's not a Fluke or anything but got some features any of the 3 I've already got don't.." .. apparently they go for about $25 US direct from Shanghai, $35 if they're over here already. If it was a hardware store's own tool line branded, I guess it would be the $100 model or so. EEVblog guy reviewed it like it cost him $400, so he didn't like it, only real thing to note is that you prolly shouldn't trust it at high voltage. Or use it when you need a tolerance under 1%. It actually feels pretty nice, solid. Mine seems to power on to all modes, gotta look out the manual though, that was missing. Gearbest product page for further info/specs never dealt with them so not an endorsement... https://www.gearbest.com/multimeters---fittin … 9586344585.html

Particularly happy to have the capacitance measurement, and possibly the frequency measurement will come in handy, have to see how that works though. TBH I thought the leads and thermistor looked okay for $5 and I'd be happy to use those with another meter if this was a complete dud...

I got two computers recently

I love small 386 machines. This looks similar to some small-factor Unisys computer which I adore.

Got some new stuff. First of all, Philips LMS CM206 2x CD-ROM + CM260 controller for it. Never seen that interface before

Optimus-branded BTC 5139 E5XKBM10140. Dome with slider with PCB. Good keyboard action, especially for being non-mechanical

And a holy grail - IBM Enhanced Keyboard Model M 1391401. Needs some cleaning but that's actually an advantage for me. 😁

is it wrong that I dont get the whole Model M thing ?

They are rugged but I have an Acer keyboard from the same period that is built like a Tank, full metal construction without the annoying rivets and with keys that are as clicky as any model M and with a feel to it that puts the model M to shame, and there are even better keyboard than that out there.

call me confused about all the model M fuss.

That's LMSI, not LMS. I have Pro Audio Spectrum 16 in its LMSI variant. I was so enviously looking on a similar one on eBay. That would be so authentic but way too expensive 😀

486: ECS UM486 VLB, 256kb cache, i486 DX2/66, 8MB RAM, Trident TGUI9440AGi VLB 1MB, Pro Audio Spectrum 16, FDD 3.5, ZIP 100 ATA
PII: Asus P2B, Pentium II 400MHz, 512MB RAM, Trident 9750 AGP 4MB, Voodoo2 SLI, MonsterSound MX300

Probably for the same reason I don't get the AMD K6 thing... people have their favorite memories and "legendary" hardware; most of which exhibit the feel of quality and sturdiness which has to be examined for closely in today's products (for the most part).

The other machine I got recently was this "Blue Chip Precision 386" compact tower, but it's not a 386, it's actually a 486SLC2(!!!). Cannot find any kind of branding on the motherboard to identify it but that's how it identifies itself. A very neat computer and future project, with some very decent cards inside (a Tseng ET4000AX based video card and an Aztech soundcard with a real Yamaha OPL3 chip on board). The hard drive seems to have some issues, I probably will end up having to replace it, but overall I'm quite happy with the system.
