I have a CM64, how is the CM500 "better" for retro gaming (Sierra and friends? Based on what I'm reading it really isn't; it's just another way of achieving the same (and parting with significant amounts of money) :)

If I'm reading your question right, the short answer is that the CM-500's main advantage over the CM-64 is the addition of GM and/or GS support, so it can replace both an MT-32 and a CM-32L.

The CM-500 has a few minor differences that make it slightly less optimal for games compared to the CM-32L and SC-55. They are thoroughly explained in the excellent Phil's Computer Lab video about the whole series of LA Sound Modules.

CM-64 is superior to CM-500 in LA abilities. For a DOS PC user the additions may not be the most useful. But if you have interest in Japanese machines (and you should if you want to hear your modules pushed to the limit).... than the 64 is a must own.
