IGN was supposed to have shut FilePlanet down back in 2012 for new downloads, but the old file downloads were still available. Looks like the domain has recently been taken over by a malware distributor.

FilePlanet was the only place to find demos and patches for older games. Thankfully, ArchiveTeam has managed to get hold of all the files. For now, there is only a simple file name search available, but I was able to find some files that were not available any where else : https://www.quaddicted.com/stuff/fileplanet/f … lename=filename

Not sure if this was widely known - I just found out today! Posting here so that it may be of help to others.

Yikes, I recently put together my own archive extensively from fileplanet. Any idea how long this is been an issue?

Looks like IGN actually sold the domain to the malware distributors in 2018, going by the WHOIS records: https://www.whois.com/whois/fileplanet.com
It wasn't the case of the domain simply expiring. Unbelievable!

So any time since 2018-02-13, I would imagine.

Suckage... hope Major Geeks and softpedia hold up.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

Damn. I guess I need to edit a few of my posts where I linked to game demos hosted on FilePlanet.

That said, I didn't notice any malware a few months ago when I was downloading some stuff from there. However, I'm using a VPN, NoScript and uBlock Origin, so one of those might have automatically blocked it.

Listing my Top 30 first and third person 3D accelerated demos from 1997 to 2003 (<= DirectX 8.1) available from alternate sources . Some of these were hard to track down.

Sorry for the necro, but I wanted to add that they only started distributing malware at around June 2021, starting with this one: https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/dfb2bd410 … 84f5a/detection

And they've more recently changed it to a newer one, that's named installer/setup for [download] if the download wasn't an exe, or just straight up named it if it was, just to try and catch more people out.

Also, I haven't seen any other mentions of this - I found a reddit post a few days after the date of the file above, when I noticed the change around that time and uploaded the installer for Ground Control to moddb, but it looked like it was auto mod removed (I tried making a similar post recently on that same sub and it too was immediately removed).
