I'm looking for an XT-IDE/XT-CF type solution for my IBM 5150—mostly so I can boot off of CompactFlash (being able to use other types of drives would be neat, but it's not a requirement). Including ones with and without built-in CF slots, I see there are a few different ones available, including:

  • XT-IDE Deluxe (one from Monotech, and one from Blue Lava Systems)
  • XT-CF-Lite v4 (from Sergey Kiselev)
  • XT-CF-Lite rev 2 (from Lo-Tech)
  • XT-IDE rev 4a (from Glitch Works)

But I haven't seen many side-by-side comparisons of them. Is there collective wisdom on how they compare, or any recommendations on which one might be best for an IBM PC?

Some people are selling Blue Lava XT-IDE Rev 4.1 boards, but I'm not sure what the difference is between 4.0 and 4.1 other than a slightly different resistor pack.

I think as long as you get a rev 4 of some sort you'll be fine

After that, my thoughts are that it comes down to:

  • do you want 40 pin, 40 pin angled, CF, CF external, or a no connector just a ROM holder version
  • do you want a bracket or no bracket
  • does it include extras like a CF or a larger EEPRom
