I picked up a Compaq LTE Elite 4/75CX complete with the SmartStation dock, 15" Compaq CRT, and matching keyboard and mouse for $100 on Craigslist a couple weeks back.
It's been a while since I've dabbled in PC hardware--been playing with Amiga stuff for the past few years. I needed an old PC to run some Motorola radio programming software, and of course it's been down the rabbit hole fixing/rebuilding since. I've stuck a sound card in the dock, the hard drive bearings went out after a few days so I replaced it with a CF card. I added a CD-ROM to the dock and stuck a SCSI2SD I had from my Amiga parts pile in for even more storage. I got Windows 95 reloaded. It's all coming back to me. Now I need to dig out a sound card with a game port and a proper joystick. Decent 1 and 2 were where it was at for me back then...
Anyway, as usual, the belt in the W1D is junk. The top head is missing too so the built in floppy is dead. I may try to stuff a gotek or something in there at some point, but for now I'd like to use the floppy connector on the dock. Is there anything special about the floppy connector? I only have one PC floppy drive at my disposal, and I'm honestly not sure of it's status so it may be bad, but no matter whether I plug it in to the "A" drive or "B" drive connector on the cable, or the position of the A/B switch on the back of the dock I can't get it to even try to recognize the floppy. If I plug the floppy in backwards the LED stays on as expected so the floppy drive is doing something... The floppy cable that came with the dock had board-edge type connectors for 5.25" drives so I am using a cable out of the junk bin. Is that the problem? Any ideas would be appreciated. I'd love to be able to boot from the dock and get the BIOS partition on a few more SD cards, or load up Slackware 4 on one of the SCSI drives just for the memories. Thanks for the advice everyone.
