I'm too scared to update windows media player as I installed media player 5.2 on this PC before and it totally corrupted windows it did the same thing on my win 3.1 tablet I'm not sure if it's the media player itself as it's beta or if it's the runtime library but it's corrupted multiple install not just on my 486 but on both my Pentiums. After a few reboots I get general protection fault errors from almost every installed app. So I'm staying right away from any mpeg or AVI players

There is the WinVN news reader: https://science.ksc.nasa.gov/software/winvn/winvn.html - should still work if you have usenet access somehow (for windows 98+, a newer version is here).

Hi again, I just remembered two more "things" of the 3.1 days..

Programs for creating 3D graphics, either through stereoscopic or anaglyph pictures (red/green or red/blue, red/cyan).
These were inspired by the "magic eye" book series and their spin-offs, I assume.
- By the way, if you use a CRT you can also make yourself DIY shutter glasses.
All you need is the driver software (archive.org etc), some generic shutter glasses and a DE9 plug.
Then you could easily interface them to a COM port (a single RS232 pin is used to activate the shutter + a ground pin).
Depending on the type of "driver CD" you got, Windows 3.1 sample applications might be included.
Back in the 90s, I was trying out some home planning software, if memory serves.

Rubrick cube solver programs. I've seen quite a few versions (shareware).

Games wise, puzzle / maze games in the tradition of "3D Monster Maze" (ZX81) were also still around.
If memory serves, there also was a faithful version for Win95 with an animated T-Rex.
Oddly, though, I remember playing it on my 286 PC, which ran Windows 3.1 merely. 😕

Edit: Glider, the game for Win/Mac, also was a thing.

And Video-CDs and CDis - Xing MPEG Player could play both of them. 😃

Yesss. 😁👍
The same guy also made Magic Screensaver that ran on Windows 2.x.

Edit: Sorry for being a bit off-topic, but it's really a fascinating Bit of history.

Edit: My father used Visual FoxPro and CA dBFast (dBase Fast) in the Windows 3.1 era.
Both were designed for databases, but could be used to create normal Windows 3.x applications, too.

dBFast was originally made by a company called "Bumblebee Software" and was able to compile Windows 2.x programs.
It was a bit like a Visual Basic of the 80s.
http://www.edm2.com/index.php/DBFast

Btw, it's possible to run Windows 2.x in a window from within Windows 3.1x.
Maybe pointless, but kinda cool also. 😀

Sound Blaster 16 with Yamaha OPL3 chip
Media Vision PAS 16 with Yamaha OPL3 chip
2x or 4x CDROM Drive
8mb to 16mb Memory

I know the 486 is more period correct but Win3x actually performs best on a Pentium class CPU.
A Pentium class CPU 75 thru 233 works best.

I actually have Win3x on my Pentium 233 computer and it performs amazingly fast.
Its like night and day between the Pentium and 486 CPU.

Running Win3x on a Pentium CPU is how Win3x is suppose to perform.
Its performs really quick and responsive.

i strongly disagree Intel486dx33
thats like pretty much any software/game/os
of course its gonna run faster on better hardware but was it supposed to perform like that? short answer no!
who had a Pentium in 1992?
win 3.1 was designed for a 386 and above
although it will run on a 286
also what does your post have to do with finding old win 3.1 software?

Well, he did write this is for his ultimate 3.11 build and not a period correct build.
But with the 1st gen Pentium CPU you can disable cache in bios to slow down the CPU to 486 and 386 speeds.
For playing CPU speed critical games.

You can also use the Setmul utility.
