Hey guys, I got a BCM SQ591 motherboard that I'm using for my old PC, after replacing my old AOpen AP53 due to it failing on me, and after booting into Windows 3.11, I noticed that my mouse I connect through serial was not being detected.

Everything else I have on the system (like the S3 Trio64+, AWE64, and Keyboard) are working.

I connected the serial port to the motherboard in the COM1 Port. I also tried the COM2 port to see if that would work, but no results.

I also tried other OSs (I.e Windows 95) to see if it was just my Windows 3.11 installation, and still no luck.

The motherboard has a PS/2 Mouse connector on J2, but I don't have one of those laying around (not the end of the world If I have to buy one, just annoying)

Any ideas? Any help would be appreciated.

Here's more info on the Motherboard I'm using. https://www.ultimateretro.net/en/motherboards/1011

Welcome to Vogons 😀

Have you checked the serial port settings in the BIOS 'Integrated peripherals Menu'?

Did the board come with the serial cables or are you re-using old ones - could be a pinout mismatch http://www.bodenzord.com/archives/117 but the BCM manual doesn't mention which one is in use

Thank you for the welcome.

I am using old serial cables that I used when I was using the AOpen AP53.

I looked in the BIOS, and saw the default options for onboard serial port 1 to 3f8/irq4, and 2f8/irq3 for port 2.

The pin layout seems to be the one mentioned in the link (I have one took apart to see it, which I also tested with.

If it is the pinout mismatch, what options would I have to solve this?

You've got the wrong cable wiring there (BCMs FAQ page for the board makes it a bit clearer) - https://web.archive.org/web/20101206235957/ht … q591/591faq.HTM

The attachment BCM SQ591 Serial Pinout.jpg is no longer available

so either option @Deksor suggested above would be best.

That would explain a lot. I will try desoldering and resoldering one of the ports.

Another thing, since the PCI card of the serial port has another port (connected to COM2) would I need to do the same for that one?

Thanks for your help.

So I desoldered and resoldered the wires, and now my mouse is working!

Thank you all for your help. It was much appreciated.

No problem - glad it was a simple fix
