Nice, that's a $1000 haul if it all came off eBay these days 🤣

If I can believe the prices the floppy drive alone would account for 10% of that 😁

They are pretty much nonexistent here. Hoping I come across one some day. I want one for my 386SX build (soon to be downgraded to a 286..)

Really? I never considered them to be all that rare. I have 3 and just got a 4th one though that 4th is a little on the weird side. It's from an industrial machine and the data cable connector is a little different.

Went disposing some leaky batteries at the municipal facility this afternoon.

In the E-waste container, I found a nice 90s-turquoise-galore Siemens Scenic desktop with 440BX, PII, TTSolo sound and Matrox VGA, rather good shape.
Asked politely if I could buy it.
As expected - not only was it denied, but in a tone of voice as if I had just suggested something that would land both of us in a forced labour camp.

Dude, with all due respect and a lot of envy: Belgium must be a really laid back country, good for you.

But these people at the "Berliner Stadtreinigung Anstalt des öffentlichen Rechts" cannot be bought or reasoned with. Some people just want to see your dignity burn. Also, they have cameras and probably large, angry Schäferhunde.
No joke, ending up with an actual penalty for theft for something like that would not be beyond this system. I mean, half the inmates in Berlin are in for fare dodging.

It's no better here in CA. The only way to get anything from an Ewaste facility here would be to have an inside connection. The one time I asked years ago, the workers there told me that it was forbidden because of "Privacy concerns." So I offered to remove any hard drives, but the answer was still a rather emphatic no.

Also, no computers donated to thrift stores here ever make it to the shelves inside, it's against policy. Monitors, mice, keyboards, speakers, and old printers maybe but never computers. And if the speakers were satellites and subs, they end up separated because the sorters get confused or just don't care, so you rarely see an intact three way speaker system.

As I've mentioned in other threads, I had a good thing going for about a year here where a nearby Ewaste site was so small that they left an overflow out in the front near the sidewalk; I'd make near daily passes to investigate after closing time. But they moved to a more spacious and secure place, and my good times were over .

Well, other option, take post outside of the center, and ask anyone going in if they have electronics and are willing to donate them to you.
and, no belgium isn't this laid back country you assume just because I made some comment, which in some cases has been known to work, though you can't use it with the same people or at the same place every time.

I recently found out how much about 5m³ ( 1 ton / 1000kg )of that recycled electronics stuff comes to, and what happens to it.
It's a f'n joke if you figure how much that amount could bring you if you could sell it all on fleabay.
If that one photo would be a 1000€, that 5cube would be...? what? a 100x? maybe more, that would be >100000€ (if all gets sold)
But... It all gets shredded to bits, sold off for the cost of the raw materials.

I'd assume that there are exactly two types of employees there:
Type A knows the regulation and believes if in any way broken, the sky will fall and we all go to gulag.
Type B knows there are some regulations but that nice guy he met at the Kegelbahn buys him a currywurst every month to have his pick before the ship leaves for Nigeria. And he won't risk that cozy arrangement for some random schmock.
The two groups probably are 50:50 but never exchanged a word outside the job because that would not be efficient.

But yes, the regulation usually cited is some BS about privacy.
As if I could not buy discarded, non-wiped HDDs by the fuckton on ebay, to criminally exploit, if I were so inclined. If that were half as lucrative as some people seem to believe.
I once sawed one in half and found not a single bitcoin in there! This is bullshit!
Engaged a moving business last summer, to clear out an apartment full of rubble here. Showed him a picture of an AT case, if he had any. "Oh, I usually throw those away".

It's a strange world we live in...

I already thought of that but that facility has a huge influx of all kinds of crap, mostly bulk waste like old furniture. Then, two in three who enter will speak neither German nor English. Translated into minimum wage, I'd be better off just buying surprise stashes on the bay.
Also, I'm serious, everything that's there is considered their property and if you were to remove it under any pretext and get busted for it: A certain type of lawmen here don't know the idea of "minor offense not worth prosecuting." At the least, you're risking three figures for the lawyer and a similar pay off to get the charges dropped. (so, not a misdemeanor or felony, it just sets you back half a grand.)

No, of course, there won't be that much of a difference. Old friend works in Brussels and well, no country is perfect.
Maybe I'm just too old to get in any kind of trouble over a vintage pentium.
Also, apart from the reasons I gave in my last post: The people there will send you away because they don't want any treasure hunters there. Partly because they're German and partly because this part of town has a rather high density of obnoxious idiots.

Yeah, well, that is a bit of a catch-22.
If all the nice stuff would be sorted out for ebay and the classifieds, it would be everywhere and not claim those prices.
Also, what's expensive to buy used is in many cases what's valuable to recycle. There really is about 50 € of Gold in a Pentium Pro. And more than 10 in older mobos of the "10,000 for a modern rig" era.
So, scrap in bulk may be nothing but whoever was to rummage through it would make sure to get most of the gold.

I'm not a completely reckless person so what I never do is take along a worthless beige case whenever I need to go to the recycling center in my city. A completely reckless person might take this case out of his trunk and place it next to an interesting machine, walk back to his car, turn around and ask the workers wether he can take something back that he placed before because he has changed his mind. Normally the workers will allow it so a completely reckless person could then go back and take the machine he was interested in - not the worthless case he brought - and load it back into his car.
Luckily I am not a completely reckless person so I can not claim that this swindle has already worked for me on three seperate occasions. After all I never did such a rotten thing.
I would advise you refrain from such evil as well because it qualifies as either theft, fraud or both.

So, "not actual legal advice, do not attempt"?

Small catch: I don't own a car.
And no worthless cases. 😁

Also, I would never try it but if I were to, I would not put it beyond those folks here to say "no, what has been put has been put" like in a game of cards.

I mean you hear it once or twice, that's information, you hear it 500 times, it seems a tad too much like advertising, and does advertising ever tell the truth?
