Hi!
I got a 440BX setup running WinME as my retro gaming rig.
It has worked great so far, no issues with either new or old games except for this game; The Elder Scrolls Arena CD Version.
I got this game in physical form and want to play it nativly, not using DOSbox, if possible.
And yes, I know Im running WinME and this maybe qould be easier using Win98SE or dualbooting but I want to use WinME as far as it is possible.
So, the installer complaines about lacking conventional memory.
The game still installs fine thou, copying a bat that is.
I can start the game and it runs as far as the character stats screen, sometimes the graphics glitches out at this point and sometimes not.
When the character is created I get the starting dream cutscene then a black screen. Only once has the game started after this point and that time it ran great.
So conclusion is that I have to little conventio al memory for this game.
When running mem I can see I got around 560-570 of 640.
I have read around that this game might need as much as 600+.
The bulk of the used memory is MSDOS.
Are there any tweaks I can try in WinME to free up some memory for the DOS stuff?
When searching around all tweaks I find are related to Win98 and isnt applicable to WinME, atleast I dont know how.
From my research;
4DOS might have a lower memory footprint.
Disable DOSKEY saves a bit of memory, or change it to Enchanced DOSKEY.
Use real dos patch/mod. (I rather not use this method, had some trouble before and I dont want to have to reinstall my system)
Make a boot disk configured for maximum conventional memory.
If there are no OS tweaks my thought is that a boot disk would be the best solution, but how would I configure it?
Thanks in advance!
