I’ve got two laptops with ATI M1 GPU: Compaq N400c and Sony Vaio PictureBook C1. I’ve tried some 3D action games and they all have visual glitches and issues. I’m trying to understand whether they are expected for this GPU or if it can be fixed somehow.

Unreal (DirectX, v226) texture is muddy and flicker sometimes. Switching mipmap makes them less muddy, but add juddering.
Thief, some polygons on the bow disappeared.
Blood 2, textures are muddy and become sharp only under certain angles.

First of all, can you tell me what’s the closest analog of this GPU in the desktop segment? I’ve got official driver:

One of my colleagues stated that it is an ATI RAGE LT PRO with 8 MB. I’ve got zero experience with this gpu since back then i had Matrox Mystique and VooDoo 3.

I just posted a reply on basically the same card:

"The Rage Pro is a great 2D card, but apart from 3D acceleration being slow it's also buggy in ways that depend on the exact driver version used. If I recall correctly, I couldn't find a driver on which both GLQuake and Unreal worked, and Unreal was glitchy no matter what."

It's indeed related to a Rage Pro, I believe the M1 has somewhat more recent drivers. In any case, I wouldn't expect games to work well. Also, I think games using the Ati CIF API don't work on an M1 either, which at least is an interesting use case for standard Rage Pro cards.

Rage XL.

Anything I should know about this gpu and it’s compatibility with the games I mentioned?

Wrong mipmap selection is very disruptive. If it is not a driver issue, better keep it disabled. I am not sure what exactly you mean by judder. Without mipmaps distant polygons might have texture resolution too high, ending up noisy. Difficult compromises await you.

Rage Mobility M / M1 is similar to Rage Pro. I had a Dell Latitude L400 with Win98 and Win2000 installed. For 98 I found a driver specific to the Rage Mobility and used that, but in Win2000 I just installed the Xpert '98 driver for generic Rage Pro and it worked. 3D performance seemed to be slightly better in Win98 though! I think I read one time that the Rage Mobility M is architecturally somewhere 'in between' Rage Pro and Rage 128.

again another retro game on itch: https://90soft90.itch.io/shmup-salad
