Okay, had to pull the board to investigate.

Found the means by which the multipliers are set: these three resistors(0-ohm):

If my calculations are correct: this should now be 2x (=6x)

The voltage is already presumably at 2.0v because that’s the rating of the chip that came out.

Next: the clock gen to set the fsb.

I suspect it will be set via the three pads at the lower right. Will have to look up data sheet..

I couldn’t find a datasheet for this specific clock gen but I found one for one with a similar name, and this is interesting,

the multipliers were labeled w12 and this, pin 18 of the clock gen goes to a resistor labeled w2 as if it was meant to be noticed. This makes sense.

It’s got a resistor now, (0-ohm) so I will remove it.

That should presumably set the 100mhz option. Giving me a k6-3+ 600 laptop as soon as I get it back together with a cpu in it :p

My next hurdle is a bios update and ram assuming these modifications worked.

I’d also appreciate input on the fastest hard drive I can install into this as I don’t have much experience replacing 44 pin ide drives with solid state equipment. Thoughts?

A ssd 144 pin 128gb

I think this chipset probably has the 128gb limit, though I am not sure.

And 512mb seems to be about as big as these sd sticks come, hopefully this chipset’s memory controller is up to it..

According to this it seems I have 512k of cache (bummer, but expected)

And 2mb of video memory, damn….. that hurts 🤣

Wonder if it would be possible to upgrade any of that…?🤔 soldering wouldn’t be too hard for the sgram but the cache, one of them is inside the socket.

I keep having issues with the laptop locking up, I think heat may be a issue,

But until now I’ve been kinda blind as I didn’t have windows installed, now I’ll try playing with setmul, and central tweaking unit and speedfan to see if I can get to the bottom of this.

Speedfan isn’t detecting anything.

I popped the processor out and tried it out in another setup, my stability issues seem to have been the processor it’s self

That's a fine laptop for Win98/DOS.

I've dealt with quite a few Toshibas.
The only thing I don't like about them is the screen stretching because it deforms the pixels unless you are running the LCD at the highest resolution

The processor was definitely the issue, it’s actually a rare result not to get a good unlock on a 570. In the thread about that unlock many people have unlocked them, this is the first to fail that I know of.

Failed unlocks on lower clock models are common though. The 570s were high grade chips.

Oh well.

I have a update. I was wrong, the processor was fine, what convinced me otherwise was a string of failed super pi tests on my other systems. That started around around the time I tested this cpu on one of them. I still have no idea why that happened.

But I was able to replicate those failed tests on known good cpus.

So anyway, I believe now that the cpu was overheating. So I will likely have to underclock/undervolt the cpu. Or beef up the cooling. And/or bin a super good cpu specimen

I will try again to get this laptop all upgraded and stable at some point soon.

I have received now a 128gb ide ssd for it in the meantime 😀

1555CDS overheated and ran unstable on the stock CPU. I had one in college and had to run it at 190MHz low speed to be able to get anything done without constant crashing. The problem was the extremely conservative fan operation, maybe it was a BIOS/ACPI issue. The RAM can go up to 160MB at least.

Are you for sure that a 256 mb stick won’t work?
