I'm running an IBM Aptiva 2170 with an AMD k6-2/500. The power supply needs to be replaced due to fan failure and general age. This has proven to be more challenging than I expected as the case is very cramped in that area. The supply it came with is only 100mm deep, with only enough clearance for about 120mm before hitting the connectors on the CD drive. I'm having trouble finding a reputable brand that this case can accommodate as most modern PSU's come in at around at least 140mm. I'm considering an SFX model with an adapter though I'm worried that the 100-105w limit for the 3.3v/5v rails I'm mostly seeing on those would not be enough as it currently draws ~70w from the wall and I plan on adding a PCI graphics card at some point to replace the integrated SIS graphics. I have found several that fit the 100mm spec but they are either as old as the one I am replacing or from unknown or unreliable brands which I'd rather play it safe with as I'm just not familiar enough with power requirements of vintage machines yet to know what to trust.

I have a lovely Antec earthwatts model that would be perfect for this machine, if only it fit 😭 Any thoughts?

That CPU has a max TDP of 20 Watt. If those 70W o the grid are for real, something in there is spectacularly inefficient. Probably the old PSU.

Criminal inefficiency would also be the only good reason to replace it. If you use that rig for more than 48 hours per day, you'll probably save some money or grey energy in the long run.
Retro systems are generally no strangers to "general age" - in fact, that's what makes them retro. 😉 So you might as well get a new PC to arrange around your new PSU, while you're at it.
Fans are a cheap, rapidly moving part, so they actually age naturally with mileage.
Get a nice temp controlled fan, clean the heatsinks of dust and consider checking the capacitors for signs of weakness, possibly replace them. It's not an Ikea couch.

But if you insist on purchasing new stuff for an antique system, for whatever reason - major OEM brands are Fortron/source (FSP) and Seasonic. Chances are, if you buy something hyperfancy modular from the shinyblingbling hardware webzine roster, it's just one of those with a grandiose label on it.

Most retail ATX PSUs will use the standard size since they're bloated and need to accommodate 120 mm fans.
Chances are, irregular sizes on ebay will be plain OEM parts and look rather boring.

Unconventional approach: Google your machines model, look for pictures of open cases, you're bound to find stuff like this:

- He uses a certain Zalman SFX with a +5 rail rated at 22 Amps.
Roughly 99% of contemporary PSUs of socket 7 had 20 there. So, if that doesn't power your S7, you are cursed.

Obvious alternative solution that will allow you to install a generic PSU: Get a shorter CD drive for a buck. I have a 2006 Toshiba/Samsung IDE DVD Writer that's only 17 cm. And that's still 5 more than a CD's diameter.

It helps a lot! I knew that reading of 70w was unusually high, I'm not really concerned about efficiency and don't run it more than maybe an hour a day, but I do worry about protecting other components. The caps all look good on the PSU it came with and I can replace the fan easily enough so I may just stick with it for now, it's only 15a on the +5 and 12a on the +3 and I'm not sure how much load something like, say, a PCI Geforce 4 or FX card would place on it- my understanding is that PCI cards can reach a max of 25w which is about what the FX-5200 would use, putting me dangerously close to the 100w limit the supply has written on it (if that 100w even means actual power drawn from the wall and not theoretical TDP). It'll probably be fine either way but I'll keep an eye out for any good deals on an SFX model👍
