Apparently this was back in 2015, and there is some discussion about it on MisterFPGA forum.
I am not an expert but many of hardware emulations are forked from some kind of software implementation.
To my knowledge, dosbox has FM OPL2 emulation but nothing with wavetable.
However PcEm seems to support GUS, source code below:

I also learned about FluidSynth included in M32-Pi project which might also be a good reference for wavetable synthesis, link below:
