Out of what you listed.. I would say the ASUS PC-DL as Gallatin has higher IPC than Prescott.

Good Vid card ! The Gigabyte would be my choice as it is the same exact vid card I ran on a MSI 865PE Neo 2 with a similar CPU and it worked very well !!

At the moment the Gigabyte is running Windows 7 x32 Ultimate SP1 with a GeForce FX 5200 and the Version 96.85 drivers which are just too old. I should be able to run Version 309.08 from 24-Feb-2015 with the new GPU.

In my notes from 2006 bought it at Best Buy and used driver 81.98 which came with it and was running XP. Half Life Coast benched it at 67fps average with everything maxed but anti aliasing.
I never tried Win 7 on it so not sure which driver would be best. I still have the card and original packaging and the Neo2 also (yes been a pack rat that long).

I haven't tried the 7800GS but I know the 7600GS AGP works perfectly well with i865 and i875 chipsets. I've used it with both of those as well as an nForce2 without issue.
The same 7600GS had totally repeatable artifacting issues when I tried it with an older VIA 694X (P3) chipset. I believe it was caused by incompatibility between that older chipset and the AGP->PCIExpress bridge chip that these video cards use.
Since the 7800GS uses the same bridge I would expect it to have the same compatibility limitations.
I think those bridged cards were a bit of a kludge and only work properly with late AGP chipsets which were still considered "relevant" in the marketplace at the time.

I've never tried using a bridged card with the AMD760 chipset, but I think I remember reading about somebody on this forum having an issue with that combination.

Thanks guys, the GPU has now arrived and I opted to install it in the i865PE system as that was easiest. I installed the card, the system posted with no issues and booted into W7 x32 so I then installed the 309.08 drivers, but when I did this the screen went blank, I could not even remote onto the system with RDP or trigger a reboot remotely so in the end I had to force the power off 🙁. Having done this I rebooted and the system is running OK 😀.

You may notice there is some confusion as to if the GPU is a G70 or a G71. I think it should be G70 as:

1. NvAPI_GPU_GetShortName() reports G70
2. NvAPI_GPU_GetArchInfo() reports 040 07 A1 which is a G70, G71 would be 040 09 A1 or 040 09 A2
3. The NVidia Chip ID is 0x047300A1 which is a G70, G71 would start 0x049
4. CPUZ reports both G70 and G71 in it's save file.
5. Google thinks NV70/BR02 is a watch, but also finds https://forum.beyond3d.com/threads/there-is-n … e-2#post-395564
6. There are A1 and A2 revisions of the 7800 GS, I suspect knowing the Chip ID of an A2 card may provide some insight.

What do you guys think. It would be interesting to see what other GeForce 7800 GS AGP cards report.

Have shim - G70. No shim - G71. You can see it through cooler gap without disassembling.

What I am really hoping for is a way to tell programmatically if a GPU is a G70 or G71 so would like to know what other GeForce 7800 GS AGPs report as the Chip ID and what their PCI Device IDs and revisions are.

AFAIK GeForce 7000 series dropped official Win9x support and provided (unmodified) drivers only for WinXP and newer OS.

My 7600 GS AGP is in storage due to the dilemma of not supporting Win9x while any WinXP build can have much better choices with newer PCIe cards.

No, there is ForceWare Release 90 BETA 93.81 November 28, 2006 for Windows 2000, that said it's way older then the WXP drivers.

Ah, I forgot about Win2K. 😅 It's not exactly a game-friendly OS so I didn't take it into account.

I checked the official driver site and GF 7000 series had ForceWare 94.24 for both Win2K (final driver) and WinXP; the latter has up to 307.83.

W2K is strange, how can later drivers have a lower version number?

i got a 7800gs on pci bus for my dual p3 system running xp with 2gb ram. I didn't build it for gaming rather to master musics. the HDMI output of this PNY brand PCI GPU with its 512mb ram should be good as AGP the only good ones too damn expensive I am sick of untested ones or ones with damaged clocks that work but not like a gpu should..
Besides having a SATA II RAID I'm sure this will keep an interesting balance.
I will try gaming though.
Due to bus limitation i bet this card will outlast agp 🤣

Your 8400 GS is a Tesla G98 and AFAIK there are no Tesla AGP GPUs at all. Further I expect it's not even native PCI and is PCIe connected via a PLX PEX 8112 x1 Lane PCI to PCIe Bridge.

BFG had "official" support for their 7800GS in driver version 82.16

There are also "modded" 82.69 drivers that work with up to the 7900GTX. I know these work because I have tested with them.
