I have not had the DOM working before. I bought it for an unrelated task which I mucked around with for a while but never completed.
I dont have another machine to use unfortunately
I have checked with a multimeter and it is getting 4.82v via the usb adapter, which I believe is ok.

maybe I will just buy another DOM of a different brand and see if that helps.

OK, so I also have a CF > IDE adapter boardand 4GB CF card. Again, not something I have tested working . Came into my possession a long time ago. I have connected that to the IDE 1 port, completely by itself, no other HDD connected. Set CF adapter to master. Powered via normal molex connection. Booted using dos boot disk. Using fdisk it says the same for this CF, 'no fixed disks present'.

I connected the CF to my pc using a cf to usb adapter. Shows on pc as a removable drive and the 4gb card blank.

As I have a similar issue with both, im wondering if
a) am i doing something stupid
b) does the CF need to formatted as FAT16 or something to be seen? (I am guessing here!)

Well, uhm, do they get detected correctly in the bios setup?

I'd generally not rely on fdisk too much - there are more advanced tools available.

neither show up in the bios when set to auto detection.

for the cf card I just found the number of cyclinders/heads etc on the spec sheet from the manufacturer. Entered these but still the disk is not see when i try and launch fdisk off the bootable floppy disk. Is there another program you would recommend instead of fdisk?

CF card is now visible by the DOS machine. I have set it up with primary and secondary partitions with fdisk and the formatted them all via DOS.

This was working with the CF connected as master and the only thing connected to the ide 1 port of the mb. Not sure why it suddenly popped up, but I was playing with the cylinder count, the CF card connection to the adapter, the jumpers and the orientation of the ide cable, so one of them!

I can't currently get both drives to be seen on the same ide cable and mb connection but I believe I read that I would need to connect the second drive (CF card) to the second IDE port of the mb for it to work alongside the original drive. Not sure how true that is.

Thanks for everyone's help so far. If I get the cf card to work properly I may well give up on the DOM.

Just a quick question with the DOM how is it powered?

Pretty sure as long as the bios doesn't know it (definitive manual settings or auto detect), fdisk can't do anything.

Other partition tools, there are severals on the "ultimate boot cd", iirc. And gparted, of course - but that won't run on the fossil. Live CDs for modern machines, if they take the drive.
