Well, first run of my Slot A Athlon 900 (I know I need a max of 850MHz, but wanted to get the basics set up first) was terrible! 94fps with my Geforce 256 DDR.

Need to get tweaking and trying different drivers, sound cards and network adapters!

My latest and probably last contribution to the contest:

I'm sure it can be beaten.
But I also don't think its possible to get more then maybe 10% more.
And that's a big maybe =)

Awesome... I like how you didn't give up for the camera until squeezing out that last .1 to get 302 even.

What was the filename of the submission? I cant see any new submissions since the second this month and that one was from another user.
Also did you modify any sourcecode etc? If so supply the source code to with the binarys.

Necrodude can help you if there is a problem with the FTP.

Submitted with my nick from another forum =)
There should be 2 files under that name, one with Intel added and one with AMD.
If not I'll just try and upload again, its no problem really =)

edit:
I get file-transfer error now, presumably cause the file is already there.

Since it is my competition I wont participate.
Instead I can share a score from one of my computers. It is a Pentium III 866mhz on a ASUS p2b slot 1 motherboard with the BX chipset.
It has 256mb cas3 sdram and a voodoo3 3000 running at 177mhz.

I get 271 frames per second in demo four.
I havent really done any hardware tweaks. The cpu runs with 133mhz bus.

Still I get 271 frames per second. This is all Quake3 tweaking. No Fancy hardware.

So dont give upp guys, there us still much that can be done tweaking wise.

My guess is that 380-390 fps could ge possible on a really fast Athlon board with DDR and a geforce DDR

I submitted my first attempt. My rig might have more in it - 380fps? Actually might be possible.

My first run was <100fps.
It took a lot of reading to get beyond 300fps. But I really started to understand how the game worked and all of the settings.

Very fun competition. My experience with Q3 prior to this was watching my younger brother play back in the day. I really didn’t know much about the game.

Things that can be done to increase fps.

x Tweak windows
Make the OS faster so it consumes less cpu power.
There are a lot of registry hacks that can inprove the speed of windows.
Disable everything that autostarts. "msconfig"
A lot of stuff can be done with windows.
Faster windows means less stuttering in Quake3.

x Windows 95 is the fastest win9x OS

x Optimise BIOS settings.

x WPCREDIT. It is a tool that lets you enable stuff that you ussually cant with the BIOS

x Drivers. Drivers. Drivers.

x Use Sound cards and network cards that dont tax the cpu as much.

x The config file. The far greatest speed inprovements can be done trough the config file.

x Quake3 is open source. You can hack the source code. Enable 11khz sound. It really doesnt work with the vanilla Quake3.exe
Disable all unnecesary stuff in the source code. Ambient sounds, world animations etc.
Compile it faster. Tune it for the cpu you use

x Slim down the game. Make the game smaller. Less data to load means faster.
You can to this with sound and textures. There is a lot of stuff that can be outright deleted.

x Compile you own speed Dll:s or just search the net for speed dll:s

x wayback machine is great for finding dead links and files. There is much hidden online that can be found

Do you hate the shitty FPS?
Why dont you get a frikkin´3DFX graphics card your fuckhead!!
Aint got no money?
Well tweak the shit out of it then!

Maddafakka!!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0UaSexTKsI

So what is this competition about. Its about getting the highest FPS:score in Demo FOUR in Quake3 arena.

sldwBhe.jpg

The person that submits the highest valid score before the 1st July wins a 3DFX Voodoo3 card!!!!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hardware rules:
Max Pentium III 900mhz or Athlon Thunderbird 850mhz CPU.
This means the original Athlon cpu:s. Not Athlon XP (and other Palaminos), X64, X2 and so on.
Same thing apply with the Pentium III. Tualatins and newer is not allowed.
You can use a faster Pentium III or Athlon if you underclock it.

You must use older graphics card then the first of Januari 2000. (Geforce DDR was review in late 1999 so its allowed).
A sound card and a network card is manditory. You should be able to play your Quake3 with us on our game nights.
We dont have any other hardware rules. You can have any motherboard, RAM, mouse, hard drive, SCSI controller, and so on.
It is only the CPU, GPU, sound card, and network card that has rules.

Overclocking/BIOS tweaking:
CPU overcloking for Pentium III:s is allowed to max 900 mhz. Athlons 850 mhz.
You can overclock your Graphics card, Ram, bus speeds as much as you like. No restrictions.
You can tweak/hack your BIOS as much as you like. No restrictions.

Software rules:
The operating system must be either Windows95, Windows98, or Windows Millenium.
You can tweak, hack, tune the operating system and you software in any way as much as you like. No regulations.

Quake3 rules:
Quake3 version 1.32 or compatable. The game must work with Quake3 1.32 servers.
You can tweak, hack, tune Quake3 in any way, as much as you like. Get the best drivers. Customise your Quake3:s cfg file. Craft/get you own DLL:s. Compile new exe:s. Do your own texturepacks! Use crazy plugin tools that boost your FPS. The sky is the limit!!
The only rule is that you should be able to play with us on our servers, AND that the game is playable. You must be able to see and hear the game.
Lower FOV:s (field of view) than FOV 90 is not allowed. You are not allowed to change the viewsize. 640 x 480 is the lowest allowed resolution.
TEXTURES MUST BE TURNED ON
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So tune up you Windows 9x operating system, overclock your graphics card ram etc, and tweak the shit of Quake3!

Get the highest possible score in:
Timedemo 1
Demo four.

JgLEZbO.png

All tweaks, hacks, tuning. Must be explained to us.
All drivers, tools, plugins. Must be explained to us.
All cfg:s, dll:s, exe:s, texturepacks/custom pak files must be submitted to us.
We want to know your computers specifications. CPU/GPU/motherboard/graphics card/ram speed.
We want to know how much you overclocked it, what you overclocked. And so on.
We want to know everything! 🙂

To submit to the competition, download the SubmissionTemplate from our ftp. Put this in your regular File Explorer:
ftp://braindrainlan.sytes.net:21005/SubmissionTemplate/
Copy SubmissionTemplate.zip to your computer.

In the submissionTemplate file you will need to specify stuff about your computer, and you will need to send copies of your config file and other hacks/tweaks.
You will also need to do a small video with in game sound that you can hear.
In the video we want to see the following:
Cpu-z and and the devicemanager or similiar program that shows the graphic card.
Then we want to see at least a couple of benchmark runs.
After the runs are completed we want you to connect to our Quake3 server
To connect type:
"Connect braindrainlan.sytes.net" we just need to see that you can play online with us.

Here is a example video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9QKmeXTqtk

We have two reasons why we want to have all the tweaks sent to us.
First we need to validate the tweaks. We need to see that it is working. Im giving away a graphic card from my personal stash. So I want to be sure that the submission is legit.
Second. We are working on "speed pak/patch" for Quake3 that will be published after the contest is over. We can call it "Fast Quake3"

When you are done with the template, rename it to your VOGONS nick name and send it to our submissionFPT.
Host: ftp://braindrainlan.sytes.net:21005
Username: bdsubmissions Password: quake32themax.
Notice that the PORT is 21005. I usally use Filezilla so here is a picture of the settings.

zl4rn3Q.png

You wont see any files on the submissionFTP even when you send over your version of the Template. There will also be a couple of error messages beacuse your FTP-client will try to list files, but you dont have that privilege. Let us know when you submitted so we can check that nothing is corrupted or broke.

The competition ends July 1st 2022
May the force be with you!
The winner will be announced shortly after.

Rankings and And submitted videos of benchmark runs will be posted in this thread

Edit: The competition is available on our discord server

No love for Mac users, we play Queake3 too on our retro Macs!

Sorry!
I dont own any MAC:s, so I dont have any possibility to verify any submitted scores.

After the contest is over we will publish a "Fast" patch with the best tweaks.
The config files will probably work on MAC:s as well. You might need to edit it some but you can probably find usefull stuff there.

I love this contest. Really interesting to squeeze the most out of vintage hardware as possible. Sadly I don't have the hardware to compete. The fastest I have is an AMD K6-2/266 system and the next fastest thing would be my 1,7GHz Celeron.

Mimi: AMD K6-2/266, S3 Trio64, Diamond Monster 3D II, Sound Blaster CT2800, 32MB RAM
Satellite 220CS: Pentium 133, SVGA DSTN, Sound Blaster Pro, 64MB RAM
Contura 420CX: 486DX4 75, VGA TFT, Roland Serial MIDI, 16MB RAM

x Quake3 is open source.

This is the bit I'd struggle with - I can mess around with the hardware all day but not have a clue on tweaking game code.

Good luck all - interesting competition!

You dont need to compile stuff. It is not manditory. If you find stuff that works in win9x, then its allowed.

I'd be interested to see also what the default install of Quake 3 performance is too for each of these builds 😀

You've now got me browsing eBay for an original GeForce 256 but they're not cheap!
