I can try later but I don't think its going to work.

R100's pixel shaders

R100-based GPUs have forward-looking programmable shading capability in their pipelines; however, the chips are not flexible enough to support the Microsoft Direct3D specification for Pixel Shader 1.1. A forum post by an ATI engineer in 2001 clarified this:

...prior to the final release of DirectX 8.0, Microsoft decided that it was better to expose the RADEON's and GeForce{2}'s extended multitexture capabilities via the extensions to SetTextureStageState() instead of via the pixel shader interface. There are various practical technical reasons for this. Much of the same math that can be done with pixel shaders can be done via SetTextureStageState(), especially with the enhancements to SetTextureStageState() in DirectX 8.0. At the end of the day, this means that DirectX 8.0 exposes 99% of what the RADEON can do in its pixel pipe without adding the complexity of a "0.5" pixel shader interface.

Additionally, you have to understand that the phrase "shader" is an incredibly ambiguous graphics term. Basically, we hardware manufacturers started using the word "shader" a lot once we were able to do per-pixel dot products (i.e. the RADEON / GF generation of chips). Even earlier than that, "ATI_shader_op" was our multitexture OpenGL extension on Rage 128 (which was replaced by the multivendor EXT_texture_env_combine extension). Quake III has ".shader" files it uses to describe how materials are lit. These are just a few examples of the use of the word shader in the game industry (nevermind the movie production industry which uses many different types of shaders, including those used by Pixar's RenderMan).

With the final release of DirectX 8.0, the term "shader" has become more crystallized in that it is actually used in the interface that developers use to write their programs rather than just general "industry lingo." In DirectX 8.0, there are two versions of pixel shaders: 1.0 and 1.1. (Future releases of DirectX will have 2.0 shaders, 3.0 shaders and so on.) Because of what I stated earlier, RADEON doesn't support either of the pixel shader versions in DirectX 8.0. Some of you have tweaked the registry and gotten the driver to export a 1.0 pixel shader version number to 3DMark2001. This causes 3DMark2001 to think it can run certain tests. Surely, we shouldn't crash when you do this, but you are forcing the (leaked and/or unsupported) driver down a path it isn't intended to ever go. The chip doesn't support 1.0 or 1.1 pixel shaders, therefore you won't see correct rendering even if we don't crash. The fact that that registry key exists indicates that we did some experiments in the driver, not that we are half way done implementing pixel shaders on RADEON. DirectX 8.0's 1.0 and 1.1 pixel shaders are not supported by RADEON and never will be. The silicon just can't do what is required to support 1.0 or 1.1 shaders. This is also true of GeForce and GeForce2.

How you managed to get here 5000+ marks?)

I’ve tried the same benchmark on my other unit and I got the same score, 1000 less than you have. Maybe you overclocked GPU or used another driver? Or lowered settings?

don't remember, probably lowered settings, to 800x600 or 640x480. But that was on the 800mhz cpu version, so try that and your scores should be higher. Was on the 12.xx driver.

I remember trying 2001se before and it didn't run and I figured its becasue the GPU doesn't do Directx 8 shaders so I didn't bother. I don't care about that .

I also managed to get one of these 😀 It's a Satellite 2800-S500 and definitely has the GF2go in it. Actually it was bought without me knowing what the full model was, I could only tell it was a Satellite 2800.

But the wear on the palm rest gives it away, along with the good display scaling.

It works actually quite well after dismantling it entirely & cleaning it up. It had the same hinge trouble that everyone else has had.
Thankfully I was able to fix that by removing the hinges entirely, putting them in a vice then working the hinge while flushing it with PTFE spray lubricant. It took a while (the full disassembly required sucks) but eventually they freed up.
Now both the hinges are working well, holding up the display and opening without cracking / giving too much resistance.
The cast metal that connects the hinge into the rest of the palm-rest had cracked though, I used some thin steel sheet to try to rebuild them a bit. Seems solid enough for careful use.

The keyboards are pretty easy to get, since it's shared with the Tecra 8100 / 8200. So now mine has all the keys + a clean keyboard.
The only thing that lets it down now is the speakers in the palm rest seem to be damaged, the right one distorts pretty badly.

Solved issue where 3dmark2001se was crashing. Followed advise to install newer driver: 30.82 (https://www.dropbox.com/s/0b7vs4ovqvqsikj/30. … 805mod.zip?dl=0)

I modified them, PowerMizer works. But for some reason I can install them only via device manager > full list of devices > have disk.

Setup.exe doesn’t work and same for inf installing. That’s a surprise cause I modified lots of NVIDIA drivers and they were installing properly, what’s wrong here I don’t know.

Yeah it's the 2800-500, which from the OP is the EU version. Which makes sense because mine has a UK keyboard. In WinXP device manager, it does show DS-XG PCI and GF2-Go.
I've got the restore CD if it's useful to anyone, I'm just reinstalling the original Win ME OS on there now to see how it is 😀 The original hard drive has some bad sectors, may as well start over. I'm probably gonna put 98SE on it eventually.

My god 😀 Sure we need these CDs. Please upload image somewhere. Do they have original cover? Could you also take picture of them? At lease one of my 3 pcs will have factory OS.

p.s. can't say that win xp or win me is good for our retro gaming. This sound card is a gem for old dos games and they will work best under pure dos and windows 98.

Sounds like miracle no idea how you manage to find such stock. If you can share information about the store it would be perfect. Thanks!

I’ll try asking them about hinges for Toshiba 5205 😀

p.s. currently playing Homeworld on this beast 😍

I was getting some crackling when I turned the audio volume wheel and a couple squirts of deoxit fixed that. Just throwing that out. Cleaning the volume pot when its disasembled on my other laptop fixed that issue too. Its probably a comon problem for any potentiameter on any audo equipment.

I just checked the site and theyre out of stock now, so sorry for getting your hopes up. I guess I must of got the last ones even though at the time they were listed as many in stock? idk.

I been thinking about trying to change the LCD out on one of mine with the one from the Dell 15inch 1600x1200 not sure if its possible or not. Then it would have 1 to 1 scaling and 32bit color. Also I wonder If I can find a spray paint that is very close to respray the palm rest.

I also had some sound issues on my first unit. I even thought that this is well known Yamaha issue where the volume is too high and should be lowered with a special utility.

But after I received two other units I understood that it’s just the speakers are broken and should be replaced. Thanks I have a Savage unit and will use it as a donor, will take out speakers from it.

Honestly this Savage unit is a poor dude because it was in perfect condition, but over time I took some parts from it like LCD, floppy drive, soon I will take out DVD drive and the speakers will go to my mentioned unit.
