I love the local treasure finds. One man's junk is another man's treasure. Just picked up this 36" Sony Trinitron Wega CRT TV for $40. It's my second Sony 36" CRT strictly for use with the old school consoles and light gun games. It's got a little cracked plastic on the top, but a little glue and plastic filler will take care of that.

That's a fantastic deal on the tv. How's the image quality of it?

I haven't actually tested it yet. When I picked it up the guy turned it on with a SNES connected to show me it's working, so I saw it for about 10 seconds, but I want to connect a good RGB or component source to it to really check it out. I'll try with a PS2 or Xbox and report back. Being a Sony Wega, unless there's some picture degradation due to age, it should be top notch.

Interestingly it has a HDMI input, which I've never seen on a 4:3 CRT TV. Wonder what could make use of that.

HDMI on a CRT really seems far out. The CRT industry made some last stand before being killed off by plasmas and LCDs. That brought some real innovation to a system mainly unchanged since the color standard was introduced in the 60s. Like 16:9 screens. It probably has the 100Hz non-flicker tech as well which mainly meant taking a normal PAL TV signal, storing the frame and displaying it twice. Don't know how it was done with NTSC, maybe actually 120 Hz?

HDMI: Well, you can attach DVI as a native signal. So, even if it has VGA in as well, I wouldn't be too surprised if many VGA in adapters even in high-end TV sets were little better than the Chrontel or Philips TV-out chips on many graphics cards. (less than great). So, having HDMI that will take most Geforce 4 or many older cards natively is pretty cool.

Fun fact about the Sony WEGA brand:
They actually acquired that name whith the "Württembergische Radio-Gesellschaft mbh" in the 1970s - a producer of home entertainment gear from my hometown. Some of their stuff had been designed by Hartmut Esslinger, the dude who would go on to create most of the looks of Apple Inc.:

We had a similar 34 inch Wega that had component, DVI, and HDMI. We used it with our DirecTV reciver for some time untill my parents got our first lcd tv. We also used it with a Xbox and Xbox 360. The picture quality from the DVI and HDMI ports was stunning it was kind of a let down with the flat panel tv

I think that might be a Hi-Scan WEGA model.

From what I recall, they are great for playing 480p games (e.g. on the Wii and PS3), but have some drawbacks when processing a 240p signal from older consoles. Been a while since I last researched that, so take what I said with a grain of salt.

With 3xDIMM slots, 2xUSB, 2xPS2, serial and parallel ports on the back doesn't look like a typical socket 7 board from 1997/1998.

Still here lurking and still collecting. Sadly though, it seems the current state of affairs is no different than what it was when I decided to stop posting in this topic/thread now many months ago. VOGONS was (and still very much is) a great source of knowledge disseminated by many people who are way smarter than I. This thread though - originally established as a space for the digital curation of these retro goodies - somehow continues to be filled with the toxic rants of people who just can't seem to enjoy the hobby for what it is. They continue to bash those who have no ill intentions and who simply want to share their treasures without judgement. In recent days, I found a case for sale at an attractive price, I perfected the purchase and used it to put inside one of the many PCs that I fixed (long ago).
In addition to the case there is the floppy reader, currently it is not yet connected, it is there to fill the hole, but I should have a floppy drive cable (34PIN) aside, obviously I will connect it later, for the moment I have no need to transfer files via floppy, I don't think I will need it in the future either, so if I need it for other older PCs I could replace it with something else more useful.
The case is a CoolerMasater, model if I'm not mistaken Centurion 5 or S ?, inside I mounted a Core2 Duo E6750 PC, Asus P5N-E SLI motherboard with 4GB of DDR2 RAM, XFX GF9800GT video card, if I remember correctly from 512MB of RAM, 120GB Kingston HD SSD in which I installed a WIN8 (can't remember which one).
On the case there are two USB ports on the front, one 1394 and a couple of audio ports, in the video card instead there is a DVI port and one to connect an HDMI cable, no VGA ports, but for the old monitors I solved it by connecting an adapter VGA-DVI.
At the moment due to busy schedules, I don't have time to bench, but I hope in the future to find the time necessary to do some tests.

Only slightly interesting thing is an extra PCI parallel port card, not sure why you'd need that! It's been wiped clean - no personal files or any interesting software even on it! It was last booted 29th Dec 2009 so it's sat on a shelf for over a decade untouched!

Oh well the case is nice and good condition, just filthy.

Thought I'd pop up here and showcase what arrived today from Japan, at least the item that actually works out of the things I ordered - a nice, rare IBM ThinkPad S30. Screen was shot, with the classic vinegar syndrome starting, but I already had a replacement for my previous S30, which sadly is in much worse physical shape and also appears to be allergic to screen inverters. Haven't done much with this beyond swapping the screen and the HDD, and dumping a random W98 image from my ThinkPad 600E on it so far though!

Apart from the P4 sign, there also was an inventory sticker on the front which also indicates "dull as dishwater", usually. But now we know that there are blue PCI parallel cards.
I'd assume, the motherboard has a first parallel port in the backplate? Chances are, the second was for some rather expensive legacy hardware like industrial machinery or plotter, special printer.

Think that case is called the chieftec dragon. Was really popular 20 years ago and sure is a quality case. Well worth that tenner on its own. Grey or white ones were much less common than black, silver or blue.
Also, is that µATX? Wouldn't have thought those existed, was such a tinkerer and enthusiast case.

That is a great system you built. That is indeed a CoolerMaster Centurion 5 that's one of my all time favorite cases.
