Hello!

I have a simple question:

I am looking for an AT (!) Pentium I motherboard that has some Intel chipset, at least 4 ISA slots and 3 PCI slots, of which one may be shared between the two busses.

It should also support EDO RAM and most importantly it should support at least 3 full-length ISA cards, which means the CPU socket or other parts (RAM etc.) must not occupy the area next to the ISA slots.

Can anyone give me advice on this?

The only board I know with these specs is a Gigabyte 586HX(2) model, it has four ISA and four PCI slots (1 shared).
The first ISA slot is blocked by the CPU socket at half length, and it might be a very tight fit at the second slot. Also, I'm not sure about the voltage converters and the clock chip, these probably also interfere with full-length cards.

Would it be possible to use an ATX board? They have more useable slots since the CPU is out of the way on these...

Hi! Thanks for your reply.

I'd have to get a new case and power supply for ATX then.

I recently thought about buying an ASUS TX97 (pic), but they seem to make rare appearances on eBay.

With ATX as form factor it shouldn't be a problem to find a suiteble board, I guess.

I have a nice macase AT case I want to use - got a GA-586TX3 atm, so I guess I'm also on the lookout for a TX97-E.

There's a nice roundup of socket 7 boards here:

The ABit AB-PX5 might be another candidate - but having an ATX power supply is really handy (most AT supplies are very noisy).

Heh, I forgot about that one. 🤣 First I thought about recommending its successor, the TX97-E, but it only has three ISA slots (full length, btw).

The Asus TX97-XE gets my recommendation here, this board is really good and often available on eBay.
There also was a version with Soundblaster Vibra16C onboard audio, however I've never seen one of those in real life.

Why the TX97-XE over the TX97-X? The X has an extra SDRAM slot.

For three reasons:
1) In the first post, Locutus mentioned that the board should have support for EDO RAM. I assumed he means the common 72-pin "PS/2-SIMM" type, not the super-rare EDO-DIMMs. The TX97-X doesn't have 72-pin SIMM slots.
2) The i430TX chipset used on all TX97 series boards does not cache more than 64 MB RAM, unless you have a CPU with integrated L2 cache (which means K6-III on a TX97 board). If DIMMs are used, you really don't need more than two DIMM slots for 64 MB.
3) The TX97-X is rather rare, whereas a X97-XE can be found on eBay almost every day.[/list]

1) Ah, yes I see. Not sure why you'd want this though.
2) Interesting! - I suppose you'd have to underclock it to 66MHz to get proper operation of the PCI slots though yes? Again, I still don't see why you'd want 72 pin ram.
3) Really? The last 2 I came across were TX97-X boards. Shame, cause I wanted an TX97-E version

Thanks for all your input.

I have decided to look for the original TX97, since it has 4 ISA slots and is an AT board. If I don't find that one, I'd probably try the TX97-XE, which 5u3 has recommended.

Well, EDO RAM would have been nice, because I have some of that memory lying around. Guess, I'll have to purchase some cheap SD-RAM. :)
