Over the past couple of years I've enjoyed tinkering with various PC builds to try and get exactly what I'm looking for.

For one of the PCs I have WinXP and I've got it updated right up to the end of 2019 with the POS stuff and I'm pleased with the result. Another one of them will get Windows 7 and that'll be similar. Another will get DOS and Windows 3 and that's not difficult.

However I'll be left with one going to Win95OSR2 and another going to Win98SE.

I'm aware of several choices on what to do with Win98SE and I've not had a very pleasing experience when I tried to go too far with unofficial service packs.

Has anyone got any advice on how to get a nice clean functional Win98SE install for gaming? I realise nothing is ever perfect but I wonder if there's a simple way to get a stable system.

This is a good guide: Generic Win98SE Installation & Setup Guide

My experience with the unofficial service pack for 98 wasn't good, so I'll never bother again. You can get the updates to 2004 with this CD: http://www.vogonsdrivers.com/getfile.php?file … &menustate=50,0

After watching many YouTube videos about older computer hardware, YouTube began recommending videos about trains - are they trying to tell me something?

Norton Ghost 2003 is available for free from The Internet Archive. I like to have a Ghost backup on a hard drive partition as that allows you to go back to how things were in a matter of minutes. This makes it trivially easy to go back to an earlier version of Direct X, roll back to an earlier driver, or recover from any number of the ways one can nuke an installation of Windows 98.

Is that update cd for English only systems or can be used for any language?

FWIW, here is the Italian version of that CD: https://archive.org/details/security-update-cd-feb-2004-ita

Just click "ISO IMAGE" to download it.
