It's funny that, when we started using WinXP, Win3.1 looked retro. However, when we started using Win11, Win7 doesn't look retro at all. 😎

that's a good observation! reflects the relative speed of progress for PC OSes back then

Decided to keep a Inspiron 530 to throw a gtx 960 2gb on, and finally replace the OG 500gb hdd with a 120gb SSD/1tb hdd in as a kids PC. Already has a Q9550+8gb of ram, should eat Roblox and Minecraft for breakfast

Bedrock for sure . .Java .. wishful thinking, even my 2080ti and 5950x gets bogged down hard by 1.19, even Opti fine doesnt help a ton anymore .. .there is just so much extra shit in 1.19 with the new world gen that its pretty damn laggy now. (Have had to drop rendering distance to 12 just to get back to 30FPS, the old Opengl engine is really showing its age)

That said . .the new world gen is downright amazing with what they have managed to get the aging java engine to do with procedural generation and the fact that world gen is really well optimised is also tell of the world gen devs, they know their shit.

Hopefully they do several passes on teh Java rendering engine soon and bring it up to spec, would love to see a Vulcan render but that too is wishful thinking.

I stopped playing Minecraft because even when the Java version did run at 60fps it sure didn't feel like 60fps. Bedrock does feel really smooth but no mods = no content.

Well they come as one package now so you get both regardless of which one you decide to play, Bedrock is great for online as it runs fast and stable and Java is really just for pissing about with mods and shit but it runs like garbage since 1.18 or so, mostly its the new world gen that caused it as its far more detailed and complex than it ever has been previously .. just the new mountains and caves alone are mind-blowing let alone the changes to the Nether and the new deep dark area.

But yeah that complexity comes at a performance crushing penalty, so I'm really hoping they have a crew ready to run passes on the rendering engine to try and speed it up, would be nice for it to use the last version of OpenGl or even run a GL > Vulcan API and get away from OpenGl altogether.

OpenGl is no longer being developed or really updated so I'm unsure why MS has not told them to switch to Vulcan already.

Well the technology was moving at very fast pace back then both HW and software is normal.. These days the tech does not advance as much as did back 30-40 years ago.. You could have the fastest system for win 98 with all the Voodoo, and fast CPU like Pentium, but 2 years later ur system was obsolete.. These days with an 2020 system you can play games no rpboelm up to like 2026 or even more when sacrifice resolution and fidelity.. Sadly also after Windows 7 there is GREAT regress in design, all win 8, 10 and now 11 look like crap, while after XP Windows Vista and later on Windows 7 did both look so much better, and like an upgrade, while everything windows after that is just pile of shit, both visual and even in terms to even work properly... But that is die to M$ getting rid of their whole update testing team, now the users are beta testers FK M$...

Honestly yes its a very silly thing to say, its just hardware bruh and certainly not worth disfiguring/maiming someone over or making such stupid claims about doing something that heinous not to mention illegal. Scrappers tend to scrap a lot of hardware not just PC stuff and they are doing something that is good for the environment as all that e-waste would end up in a landfill if they were not recovering the precious metals from it. I for one certainly prefer to see the metals recovered than see all that e-waste in a landfill, e-waste covers a lot of stuff that isn't PC related nor collectable.

So chill the hell out and stop making silly childish claims about wanting to hurt other people.

With that said we should drag this thread back on topic no ?

it sure did have a long run though, i'm not familiar with Vulkan at all, but it makes sense to change as the hardware has changed so much

Vulkan is pretty much OpenGl reborn as a bare metal API, it can do pretty much everything DX12 can.

It's also crazy efficient as well. It's a great api that I wish more developers would use.

I think MS pulls a lot of strings so they stay on DirectX.

I'm sure they put significant money behind DX to keep everyone using it. Don't get me wrong DX 11 and 12 aren't bad API's. Vulcan is just way more efficiently using your hardware.

MS has a hands off attitude to Java Minecraft, bedrock is their DX12 baby and its behind Java in features and modding but it makes considerably more money via MTX.

Cheers to elvis @ ocau for the heads up on this news:

Anyone heard of the "PiGUS"..? Looks like things might be getting a little more interesting for all those people that missed out on the GUS experience over all these years.

Wooo I love it when people use the Pi for cool shit like this, so great to see and hear it working!

Now to wait for it to hit production so I can grab one to play with, I have a spare Pi sitting around doing nothing.

I heard about this project about 2 weeks ago. That's awesome! I'm still waiting for any news about the BitchinFastAudio 3000
but nothing is happening there. I'm sure this is the future in Retro-PC hardware, just like it is now with the older homecomputers. The original old hardware will get too rare and too unreliable to be used forever, so it will be recreated with FPGA or emulated on microcomputers

I was browsing a local trading site and I just found the cooler I got earlier this month:
14-121-333-02.jpg

Looks like it's from a GTS250 so if I buy a fan for it, it should be good for my 8800GT.
