just updated my old vmware workstation 15 player to the latest 16.2.3 build-19376536
VMware Tools for Windows version 10.0.12, build-4448491
Display: VMware SVGA II (vmx_fb.dll) ver. 12.01.0008.0000 9/29/2016 1:35:26

And D3D OpenGL stopped working
Anyone can confirm that?
Vmware tools are installed, reinstalled, but dxdiag detects only ddraw (played dx7,8,9 tests correctly before)

Glidos was working before with vdos32 with openglide(opengl) and also with nglide(d3d).

DirectX Version 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
Though i guess dx version is not important as OpenGL stopped working too.

Glad it works again. 🙂

I've searched the net for causes of the problem, but I didn't find much information.

Another reason could be a problem with mksSandbox.exe.

A while ago, I had experienced a similar issue with XP on VBox.
VBox: 3D acceleration for XP/Vista broken since v6.1
The culprit was that the old video device with XP 3D acceleration was nolonger available in new versions.
However, this likely is not the case with VMware, as well.

I use VMware-workstation-full-16.1.2-17966106 w/ VMware-tools-windows-10.0.12-4448496 for D3d and OGL for XP guests (Also 2000 with older additions). Haven't tried newer versions yet since every time I do I have to modify vmware to run macOS.

Awhile back one of the devs who works on Vmware posted here about updating soundcard support for DOS. Mabye we can track him down about XP support being broken.

I have vmware player 16.2.2 build-19200509 installed, and d3d8/8.1 and 9 acceleration works under XP. I use the d3d8to9 wrapper to get better compatibility and performance with d3d8/8.1 games.

I haven't tried 16.2.3 yet, but it'd be really odd if they stopped supporting acceleration under XP in a, basically, bugfix release.

Saying that, d3d7 and directdraw-using d3d8 accelerated games either don't play, or are unaccelrated and hence extremely slow, and some also have visual issues.

VMware-player-16.1.2-17966106.exe - 3D works here
VMware-player-full-16.2.0-18760230.exe - 3D doesn't work here
VMware-player-full-16.2.2-19200509.exe - 3D doesn't work here

maybe the "full" broke it for me

I have that exact 16.2.2 full file.

All 3d is broken? Is d3d9 broken too? It works here.

Maybe it's OS or video processor related. I'm using windows 10 64-bit 21H2 (19044), and geforce 1060 with driver 511.23.

If you're running Windows 2000 as a guest operating system, you probably won't get 3D acceleration support if the virtualHW.version parameter is set greater than 9.

When I got Windows 2000 running, I had to set the parameter in line 3 of config.vmx file to read virtualHW.version = "9". I don't know if 3D acceleration support is going to be stripped in Windows XP/Vista guests in future releases of VMware Workstation Player and Pro.

Just verified that 3D Acceleration still works on 2000 and XP guests with Vmware Workstation v16.2.3 with Windows 11 on the host with a Nvidia 3080.
Also macOS support much easier to enable thanks to https://github.com/drdonk/golocker/releases
