You're going to love that system. My main desktop I built a year ago is a 5950X on an ASUS Crosshair VIII Dark Hero mobo with an Optimus water block and Swiftech Mcp655 pump, and a slew of Noctua fans on Corsair radiators. It's ridiculous how powerful and fast the system is and it never breaks a sweat no matter how hard I push it.

Bought 3 external USB optical drives. 1 of which is a Blu-Ray writer and the others are standard DVD-RW drives.

My old WD NAS Drives were getting slow and old so I purchased some NEW Ones before the old ones die.
Also some external USB portable hard drives for backups.
I like to have multiple backups incase some of these old drives die.
These NAS and USB backup drives are inexpensive too.

I have 4tb WD MyCloud NAS drives
And 5tb WD External Portable USB hard drives.

These are large enough for retro software and games.

I Strongly urge you guys to backup your important data.
I use my NAS drives to store all my retro software, games, and music.

Its just easier to install software and games over the network.

Got some old/new junk that will be "Modern" purposed more than retro, three 128GB SSDs will speed a few things up, AV500 powerline units to bridge office to the cable mofodem. Couple of 2GB sticks DDR3, which I hope my 775/DDR3 box will like. Gigabyte HD7750 1GB OC, yay, giraffics chore necks one point oh! Vulkan 1.2 it's the minimum minimum for minimal minimalism on post windoze se7en carp. Well yah, it's about Vega 7 or 1010-1030ish ballpark still. Also got the weirdest J1900 ITXish board in existence... it's got like a bank of 10 SATA ports, and just in case you were running out of SATA ports, one on the board too, and an mSATA, because obviously you needed one of those instead, but what if you don't just wanna waste all your SATA ports on boot drives? It's got you fam, there's internal USB port for a boot drive. (Rumors say it only boots off mSATA and USB but by the look of this variant, the lone mid PCB SATA one might) it seems like it should be surprisingly grunty for a 10W chip, like fast C2D speed, though it takes twice as many cores to do it. Anyhoo, some purpose will arise for it I'm sure... possibly I'll even plug SATA drives into it. Meant to be not quite ITX, thinking about a Dell case that's unemployed that's not quite ATX, match made in heaven or what?

edit: Oh used SSD pile has Samsung 850 EVO, Samsung/Lenovo PM871, Sandisk X300... if anyone has any particular utils or updates to suggest applying to make them "almost as good as new" then I'd appreciate the tip.

My keyboard has died so ordered one of these, only £31 on Amazon at the moment. I've always been a big fan of Microsoft keyboards and mice, but I hate the fact the wireless ones are paired to the dongle and there's nothing you can do if you break/lose the dongle or want to replace just the keyboard or mouse.

Bought a Perixx Periboard-322 keyboard/trackball/backlit combination for my work laptop since the MSTE and the other keyboard I used need repairs.

Bought an ASUS Prime X470-Pro with a Ryzen 5 2600 and fan, I/O shield, and 16GB DDR4-4400 RAM for $253.96 altogether (secondhand).

The board/CPU and RAM are from shopgoodwill.com and the I/O bracket from eBay.

My main desktop will finally get a major upgrade after 7 years of being on an AM3+ build.

The X570 chipset will also work with Windows 7 (and I'm guessing the very last AMD chipset that will) since you can use AMD's X470 chipset drivers on a X570 board without issue. You still need the hacked USB 3.x drivers and the Microsoft NVMe driver of course. What I found, though, was my slipstreamed Windows 7 install CD did not work on the X570 board like it did on the X470 board (USB keyboard/mouse and NVMe not detected). How I got it all working on the X570 board was using a clone image from my X470 system that was setup in Windows 7 64 already. The X570 system literally booted right up from the cloned X470 system HDD image without issue. The source X470 board was an ASRock Fatal1ty X470 Gaming-ITX/ac and the target X570 board was a Gigabyte X570SI AORUS PRO AX (rev. 1.1). So it even worked across manufacturers which was a nice bonus. Just a FYI for anyone wanting to install Windows 7 on these platforms.

On all of these boards I did have to replace the M.2 WiFi card with something Windows 7 compatible (Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 8265). Also, the LAN interface on the Gigabyte ITX board has no Windows 7 driver so you are stuck with getting a Windows 7 compatible USB LAN option. Everything else works and has native Windows 7 drivers including the integrated sound. Of course NVidia's 3000 series GPUs will also be the very last of their product line to support Windows 7 as well. So if you want a platform that is still pretty much Windows 7 compatible and new in box this would be a good time to purchase before it all gets retired and the Ebay prices go through the roof on any NIB leftovers.

And, what benefits are there really, in your opinion, of the X570 vs X470, when using Windows 7?
I suppose if you can safely(?) use say a 5800X cpu, you also benefit from faster RAM options, but... if focused on gaming, will you notice it much on the (low core) games that are actually supported on Win7 ? (all the new fancy games require DirX 12 apparantly, limiting them to Win10/11+)

As for LAN , Wifi, and whatnot, I have no real need for that. This will most likely remain an air gapped static gaming PC with no internet.
(no Steam in sight... 😋 )

And yes, funny you should mention it - I am trying to 'stock up' (oh man, those prices....!) on decent Nvidia 3000 GPUs as well, will be a loong time investment - as the last Win7 computer I'll ever build© would surely benefit from some spare parts in the coming decades... 😆

PS: +was quite surprised to see the RTX 3090 Ti getting a Win7 driver this spring....
(while all the other/older cards lost their driver support in September last year)

My specs are in this thread over a couple of posts. I had the 5900X on the X470 and moved it over to the the X570 mobo. Kept the same 3200MHz DDR4 RAM I had on the X470 as well. I installed the clone image first on one 1TB partition and then installed Windows 10 on the other 1TB partition. Windows 10, of course, detected Windows 7 with no issues and I now have a smooth running dual boot setup.

Basically, Windows 7 screams (much like Windows 9x on a fast Pentium III or 4), but tbh if you are on an X470 board already I see absolutely no reason to move to X570. I will say the PCIe 4.0 NVMe speeds are blazing fast on the X570. On my X470 I had the PCIe Gen 3 Plextor M9Pe(G) @ 3200MB/sec large file reads whereas on the X570 coupled with that Samsung 980 Pro I get over double that. The only reason why I upgraded is because the ASRock X470 ITX board had the NVMe on the backside of the mobo (terrible design choice imo) with no way to cool it properly so the NVMe failed within six months due to sketchy thermals. I previously had the ASRock X470 Taichi Ultimate ATX mobo for about two years and that was an excellent board and played very well with Windows 7. One of my favorite X470 boards tbh, but I am on the road quite a bit so I needed the portability of the ITX form factor. I also have read the ASRock X570 boards do not play well with Windows 7. Have not tested this myself, but I am very satisfied with the Gigabyte X570 ITX mobo.

Bought this earlier today to upgrade/replace my existing board. It's kinda ugly, but should bring some quality of life improvements to get more out the hardware I'm currently running. I don't plan on really upgrading my main rig much expect maybe also ditching the stock cooler (which if I want to get a better cooler, I need the a larger board anyways). Hard to believe though that the Haswell platform is nearly a decade old. I finally gave in and got myself an Apple Silicon Mac, which, naturally means I needed to play a PC exclusive on it using an ADB keyboard.

I got an EVGA Nforce 790i motherboard with a Core2Quad and Noctua fans for 50 bucks.
Can't wait to test this out with my two GTX 570 and eventually do triple SLI when I find a matching third one.

I have a P5E3 WS that can do dual SLI with hacked drivers, but there are no hacked drivers for Windows XP, which makes me sad.

Spotted a i3 8100 combo deal late Sunday, and *poof* suddenly every evening this week fills up with "nonsense" well, not really nonsense, just "not letting me do computer chasing" stuff. It's a decent deal I think, which leaves me thinking I won't be getting it as it might be gone before I get a chance to pounce. So another "one that got away" deal maybe. At present it's the i3, cooler, Asus board and 8GB, also seeing an M2 drive on there, could be getting thrown in too. Does over 6000 assmarks, so twice as fast as anything I've got right now*. Could double that in a year or two whenever I can grab cheap 8G or 9G i7

* yeah I never got on top of that Haswell Xeon deal either, crap just blew up here, deaths in the family, the works.
