Lost Eden problems

I've been trying to Lost Eden to work on my xp machine. I've tried running it thru dosbox, vdmsound, and thru 95 compatability mode...

Now, the game runs, but I cannot get sound support. I have a sound blaster live audigy which in the past has allowed for support of old dos games (such as NOMAD thru dosbox) with sb 2.0.

any and all help would be appreciated. thanks

Which is it? A Sound Blaster Live! or a Sound Blaster Audigy?

Maybe he really meant a "Live Audigy", as in an Audigy that actually works properly. *heh*

It's a 486-based CD-ROM title, but we'll need to know if this is 2K or XP being used first. If XP, was native SB emulation tried, etc...

XP and Audigy.

SB emulation, as in the built in XP emulation? I've always heard that it is very bad and shouldn't be used. Lost Eden has stunning audio (especially the music) and I'd want to experience it at its best.

Well, VDMSound is preferable in most all cases, but there's always the possibility of the "fluke" game that works better with the XP emulation.

BTW, when you said, "cannot get sound support" that means what? No sound at all, but the game runs? Runs with just noise?
Locks up?

Also, you mentioned SB emulation in DosBox, that's part of DosBox itself and has nothing to do with your sound card.

Lost Eden has stunning audio (especially the music) and I'd want to experience it at its best.

Is part of this from audio tracks on the CD? That might need an additional tool to work.

game runs properly (no lock ups) in both dosbox and vdmsound, i just get no sound. and i believe all the audio is embedded in a .dat file, which is unfortunate because the sound track for the game is like $20 in europe...

anyway, if you have any suggestions or possible settings, id appreciate it.

That doesn't make any sense. It's just going to be some standard audio format, or will be decoded as such, since they aren't allowed to do anything else. Chances are you're doing something wrong. You need to run the program by right-clicking and choosing "Run with VDMS" in Windows (and the sound in the program needs to be Address 220, IRQ 7, DMA 1), and DOSBox only emulates a SBPro (or possibly even only an SB2) and that is on a different IRQ.

Do you mean DosBox as in the emulator? That would be odd, since technically it's not possible.

That's probably one of the remixed CD's where they take game music and enhance it for the CD release.

...anyway, if you have any suggestions or possible settings, id appreciate it.

If/when I can find mine, I'll let you know.

In the meantime, I did come across at least one .MOD that you could listen to...

for DosBox, all you have to do is make sure you mount the cdrom and the drive the directory is it. it DOES run, just slow and choppy.

for the audio (soundtrack), it is the original, made by the composer, check out the samples of the music in the game:

Primary Sound Driver (DirectSound)
Sound Blaster Pro (220 5 1)

i was using the same dma channel snover suggested. and dear god, the music is even better thani remember. i WILL find a way of extracting them...

Surprisingly, this works. Technically, it requires a 486SX, perhaps that was just for speed? Need to ask Harekiet about this. The speed can be easily fixed by increasing the speed of the emulation (Ctrl-F12). As you said, no audio works. And the game will lock when it tries to play a voice sample.
Choosing no audio seems to let it run fine.

Good to know. This may be the only way to get 16-bit versions of the tunes (the originals are apparently 8-Bit Protracker modules).

Same here, except with the IRQ at 7. Not sure why it's choking on the SB16 emulation though...

Attaching the error/warning log in case Vlad can figure it out.

its almost sad that ive beaten the game since then, but it never was a long game. especially when i beat it 10 times many years ago...

this was the first CDROM game i ever bought and played, and i was not disappointed. games easy enough, and you only die if you sit by the t-rex's too long. but then again anybody who sits by them deserves to die...

too bad the audio is embedded in that .dat...
cd size: 511MB
eden/dat: 439MB
(the rest of the space goes to avi demo clips of starfleet command, giants: citizen kabuto, and torment)

of course, if any of you know how to extract the audio id appreciate that too... =p

It tends to work better with Windows titles than DOS titles (can't find anything in the original BLOOD, but finds all kinds of things in BLOOD2). In this case, however it works fine on my Lost Eden CD.

Seems to find every single snippet of audio in the game (1700+ samples). All are apparently 8-bit mono samples, so if you really like the tunes, the CD is still a good option.

Not really, of course you're talking to an Amiga guy here...*heh* I'm used to all kinds of cool-sounding MODS for quite some time, even back to the time when PC advocates were telling me that basic AdLib and EGA was all they needed. Having said that, the composer has done an excellent job of splitting up the tunes into just the right-sized pieces to make it flexible enough to change quickly, yet play seamlessly like an endlessly long sound sample.

Super-super? Sure, I guess so. *heh* Just saying that if you like the protracker format music, you'll probably love the CD.

I really hate the trend there is toward using MP3/OGG/another WAV format nowadays. There was one game I played somewhat recently, I believe it was The Hive, that used a really nifty pseudo-MOD format. Great music. Wish it was in IT or similar format, but c'est la vie. I actually wrote a rant about this several years ago that was used in an article on (I think) Trax in Space (which is gone, which really really sucks).

It has its place, but there should be more interactive music as well. Of course, that means the composer has to work harder for it to function properly...

just bought lost eden on ebay... it runs on the latest cvs (2.5.2004) without problems, even with sound.

once i had demo version of that game on some cd-rom, but i lost it and always wanted to buy the full version. anyways, i'm now enjoying the music in the citadel of mo being curious how the story goes develops.
