Disabling the L2 cache won't make much of a difference. You will have better results just installing a Pentium 100MHz or slower, if your purpose is less performance.

I'm confused, will that be more effective than just set the jumpers to let say 50x1.5 MHz ? I did so and One Must Fall is still to fast.

Cache can be disabled via configuration using compaq diagnostic and setting disk.

Cheers, Jason

I'll try to do so.

I did not find any option in bios to turn off l2 but setmul actually had some cool options for this processor. I used it to turn off l1 cache and that was enough even at 60x2 mhz.

Not sure if I am to happy using this as my DOS rig tbh. Maybe I'd rather build a amdk6-2+ rig instrad, but I like the form factor. I have to try some Lucas arts games and see.

Good point 😆 Sometimes the easier answer is the best one! I'm glad you found a working solution.

That's great to know, I have compaq stuff too. 386 25, 33 and 486 33. All have external cache and choice of pentium boards to tinker with.

What programs that are too fast even on pentium 120?

Cheers,

Great Northern aka Canada.

I have only tried One Must Fall and it was running way to fast. It was slighly better at 75 mhz than 120. As there is an sound option that is "optimized" for pentium and 75 mhz is too fast I find it a little strange. I guess you could buy a pentium without L2 cache at the time and thats why I think disabling it is enough, if you know how to.

Wing Commander and Indiana Jones and the fate of Atlantis are two other games that are speed sensive.

Hello, sorry to revive an irrelevant thread, but I cannot yet post new threads.
I have a Compaq Prolinea 486/33 and I wish to add a CDROM drive but I need the special Compaq drive rails.

I was wondering if anybody has the measurements & dimensions for these rails and can share as I want to attempt to fabricate them myself from spare metal. Maybe with some photos if you happen to have them.

Thank you

I took some pictures with a (metric) measuring tape. Also with a paper that has 5x5 mm squares. Hope thats enough. I did not measure the thickness of the steel but I guess it is between 15-20 mm the kind you get in cases.

Alright, recreating the diagnostic disks and deleting the recovery partition did the trick. 😀

I included SP4711.exe for future use and for anybody who might need it.

do these work on the ProLinea, because it says its for the deskpro

  • Prolinea E Series 575e, 5120e, 5100e
  • Deskpro 2000 6200, 6180, 5200, 5166, 5133, 5120, 5100
  • Deskpro 590, 575, 5166, 5150, 5133, 5120, 5100, 466, 450, 4100

Well I'm taking mine to its limits that I can

Pentium 166 up from the 120
64mb EDO
S3 Virge/DX 4mb
Promise Ultra 66
128GB Compact Flash, only partitoned 64GB for trash collection, and of course can move it to my USB CF adapater on my modern comp for file transfer
