I installed 2.04 today and tried it out with the VGA version of Quest for Glory I by Sierra. The music works great and it's so nice to have real music instead of just pc speaker. When I set the voice/effects to Sound Blaster in the Sierra install for the game , though, the sound effects work, but they play over and over until the next effect is triggered. Like when a door shuts, the slamming door sound plays over and over until another sound is played and then that plays over and over, etc. I downloaded and installed the newest Sound Blaster driver from the Sierra site. I haven't changed any of the settings for VDM and I'm running the game by right clicking the program. All the music settings work fine including the Sound Blaster one. This is one Win2k SP3 with a builtin sound card on an Abit board. Any one else had this happen?

dysgenic: Did you get the correct driver from Sierra? QFG1 should work with *no* looping when using the latest Sierra dirver:

( from http://www.ece.mcgill.ca/~vromas/vdmsound/com … /compat.SP3.txt )

MIDI=ok
SB=ok
Rem=Make sure you have the latest AUDBLAST.DRV from Sierra (http://ftp.sierra.com/patches/pc/sb16drv.exe), or else you will get an "Unable to initialize audio hardware" error.

Yes, other Sierra games have the looping problem, but not QFG1:

snover: this is a legit thread for QFG1 only, I'm reopening it.

I did get the newest driver from Sierra which fixed the 'Unable to Initialize Hardware' error. I found this in the post that snover pointed me to and it worked:

On Sound Blaster use IRQ 5

But on the DOS Environment type in the following on the AUTOEXEC.BAT area

SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 H5 T6

Just to add some quick info for anyone else that might be trying to get this game working, there are three places in the game that cpu speed are a problem (I have a PIII 750):

Mage's Maze against Erasmus - the creatures move way too fast, but it's actually still fairly easy to win.

Fighting the instructor at the castle - the instructor moves so fast it's not possible to even make a move before being defeated although this isn't necessary to win the game.

Yorick's room in the fortress - after pulling the chain to open the door, the door closes before you can get to it. This one sucks because it's at the very end of the game and has to be done to win.

I downloaded DosBox and used it to slow down my computer for this last one and it worked great. I haven't tried the other two spots with it, but I imagine it would probably help.

I just want to say this site is great and thank you for the help with this. QFG1 is probably my favorite game of all time it's great to be able to play it now with the music and sound effects and get all the way through it.

I highly recommend you try running this with DosBox. It should run, you might have to increase the number of cycles to make it run at the proper speed.
